  1. Dominican Republic • Location: the Eastern part of the island of Haiti (Hispaniola) and offshore islands in the Caribbean.  • Capital: Santo Domingo • Area: 730 Sq. km

  2. The Flag • The flag is supposedly mixed with the Haitian and French flags. The blue represents liberty, red represents bloodshed and fire, and white represents sacrifice. The coat of arms is in the center.

  3. Date of Independence • February 27, 1844

  4. Historical Significance • This country and the country of Haiti was once called Hispaniola, one of the islands Christopher Columbus visited back in the late 1400’s.

  5. Significant national holiday • January 26th – Duarte’s birthday. Duarte was the founding father of the Dominican Republic.

  6. Famous Structure • One of the famous structures of the Dominican Republic is the La Torre de Homenaje. Translated to the Tower of Homage, this is the oldest military structure in the Americas. It was also used as a prison until the 1900’s.

  7. Famous landscape • Pico Duarte is the tallest mountain in the Carribean. It is a part of the Cordillera Central range, which stretches from the plains to Haiti.

  8. Famous Man • Juan Pablo Duarte was one of several men to help fight the Haitian government to create the Dominican Republic. He died in 1876 at the age of 63.

  9. Famous Women • The Mirabel Sisters, Patria, Maria Teresa, and Minerva, became symbols of popular feminist resistance. They were against the dictatorship of President Rafael Trujillo. Nicknamed the Butterflies, they had been arrested many times for their resistance and were assassinated in November of 1960.
