Timing of the Change from NAIA to NCAA Division II • Official application to NCAA was made on June 1, 2010 and we were accepted into candidacy on July 12, 2010. • Leaving the NAIA American Midwest Conference after 2010-2011 year. • Admitted to the NCAA Great Lakes Valley Conference on October 6, 2010. This will involve all sports except Men’s Bowling and Ice Hockey. Women’s Bowling and Women’s Lacrosse will be NCAA sports. Teaching for Excellence

  3. Time Frame for the Change to NCAA Division II: Impact on Post-Season +Arrangements for post-season tournaments and games are being explored. There is a Waiver Process in the NCAA enabling limited championship opportunities. Teaching for Excellence

  4. Great Lakes Valley Conference *Few institutions have football, wrestling, lacrosseand bowling. Teaching for Excellence

  5. Campus Changes Necessary for NCAA Membership • Administrative Changes—committee and organizational changes • Process and Procedural Changes—primarily involving recruiting and admitting student-athletes. Training currently in progress. • Budget Changes—changes to scholarships and compliance. • Life in the Balance Directed Changes—primarily how athletics impacts students. Teaching for Excellence

Impact of the Change on McKendree University: Administrative Changes Athletic Administration (NCAA): • Dr. Todd Reynolds—Director of Athletics • Kim Smallheer—Director of Compliance • Melissa Ringhausen—Senior Women’s Administrator • Dr. Peter Will—Faculty Athletic Representative We are incorporating NCAA regulations and administrative structures as soon as possible. An NCAA consultant reviewed our progress on December 6-7, 2010; the report of that evaluation should be available by January 12, 2011. Teaching for Excellence

  8. Impact of the Change on McKendree University: Compliance Committee The role of this committee is to evaluate and help assure compliance with NCAA Division II procedures, rules, and regulations. The following are the current members of this committee: • Kim Smallheer—Compliance Officer and Chair • Deborah Larson—Registrar • Beth Juehne—Financial Aid • Dr. Peter Will—Faculty Athletic Representative • Josie Blasdel—Admissions • Scott Billhartz—Development • Paul Zinck—Business Office Teaching for Excellence

Impact of the Change on McKendree University: Athletics Program Oversight Committee The role of the Athletics Program Oversight Committee is to provide an independent internal review of the Athletics Program. Members of this committee are: • Dr. Todd Reynolds—Director of Athletics and Chair • Dr. Tami Eggleston—Associate Dean and College of Arts and Sciences • Dr. Jean Sampson—School of Business • Dr. Ann Collins—College of Arts and Sciences • Dr. Darryn Diuguid—School of Education • Dr. Deanne Riess—School of Nursing and Health Professions • Mr. Jeff Campbell—Director of Alumni Relations Teaching for Excellence

Impact of the Change on McKendree Students: Student-Athlete Advisory Committee • The role of this committee is to represent student-athletes in the governance and oversight of the athletics program. • The committee has a representative from each intercollegiate sports teams (men’s and women’s teams are represented). • This committee began meeting in April 2010. • The SAAC is involved in the Life in the Balance initiative. NCAA Life in the Balance Initiative • The purpose of the Life in the Balance initiativeis to help student-athletes establish a balance among the athletic, educational and social parts of their lives. • Life in the Balance encourages and enables student-athletes to participate in campus and community life. • Life in the Balance is implemented through NCAA Regulations, by the role of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, and with participation in community service and other activities. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VFwhviQyzEw Teaching for Excellence

  12. Impact of the Change on McKendree University: NCAA Compliance NCAA rules and regulations are currently being implemented. For example in a manner specific for sports the following are carefully controlled as part of Life in the Balance: • Practice times, • Squad size, • Number of games or matches, • Number and nature of out-of-season competitions, • Use of banned drugs and stimulants, • Grades and eligibility, and • Community service. NCAA ensures compliance using self-reporting andonsite testing, auditing, and inspections. Coaches and the Compliance Committee are current in training. Teaching for Excellence

  13. Impact of the Change on McKendree Students: Comparison of NAIA Core Valuesand NCAA Division II Attributes *Introduced to University 101 students by coaches and faculty. Teaching for Excellence

Summary • McKendree University is changing to the NCAA as part of a progressive association with high-quality institutions. • The change will require additional compliance to follow the rigorous standards of the NCAA. The Life in the Balance initiative is to facilitate balance in the lives of student-athletes. • Schedules and conference changes required by this change will necessitate the development of new rivalries and competitors. • Budgets, scholarships and financial aid packages are being adapted to NCAA requirements. • Academic standards for entering students and for student success will be higher and will encourage a higher quality student body.
