  1. Introduction toSecond Life Your virtual platform to experience the interview process

  2. Overview Second Life is an online, virtual world. In this virtual environment, you will interact with others as an animated resident - or avatar - where you will gain experience in interviewing. As an avatar, you will be be able to interact with others like you would in real life! You will be able to practice with both mentors and peers, which will give you valuable experience to prepare you for the actual interview process! Your virtual workplace – also known as the grid – will be the setting for your interaction with other veterans!

  3. Second Life Basics Before you begin, you must install a stand-alone program, the Second Life Viewer, to participate in the 3D content of Second Life. The installation process is quick and easy. Your computer will also need to meet the System Requirements of Second Life as well. We recommend youuse the Firestorm client system. There are three key steps before you begin the interviewing the process!

  4. 1. Choose an Avitar This is how YOU will appear in Second Life. You can choose from a wide selection of avatarsand design the avitar to best represent your personal characteristics. You will also want to choose clothes to present a professional appearance - like you would for a real interview! If you change your mind later, don't worry—you can update or modify your avatar any time you want!

  5. 2. Choose a user name Your username is the account name that you use to log in to Second Life. It has to be unique and professional, so don’t choose a simple or common name. Later, you can also choose a display name that everyone sees in addition to your username. Warning: Choose your username carefully! Once chosen, you can't change it. Although you can designate a "display name," your username will still be visible, and others may use it to refer to you.

  6. 3. Downloading To enjoy the rich 3D content in Second Life, you must download and install the Second Life Viewer, an application that runs on Windows, Mac OS, and Linux. Most web browsers will download the installer automatically; if that does not happen, just click Download & Install Second Life.

  7. Your Virtual World Office Space You will practice your interviewing skills as an avitar in our specifically designed Virtual World Office Space. Here you can practice and gain experience with both mentors and veteran peers – just like yourself! You will interact in a professional environment much like you would in a real, face-to-face interview. You will also receive helpful links and in-world landmarks to help them maneuver in the virtual world setting.

  9. Peer-to-Peer Interviews You will first practice your interviewing with a peer. You will be able to schedule a meeting date and time for your peer-to-peer interview. Prior to the meeting, you will review their respective resumes. Next, you will sign in to Second Life and teleport to the Virtual World Office Space classroom at an appointed date and time. Once there, you will meet with the peer and conduct the interviews with pre-arranged questions.

  11. Mentor-to-Peer Interviews After gaining experience with peer-to-peer interviews, you will then move on to work with a mentor. The peer-to-mentor interviews will be performed in a more professional setting, simulating the job environment where a typical interview would occur. You will again teleport to the professional office space within Second Life at an appointed date and time as scheduled by you and your mentor. Your mentor will provide you with a review of your final mock interview. Upon completion of the interview, you will be able to discuss the evaluation of your mock mentor-to-peer interview with your mentor!
