NOTES • Pattern 5 is a list of balanced pairs. • It contains the conjunction and between each item and a comma after each pair. • A and B, C and D, E and F. • Each pair must complete the other and be in the same subject.
What is difference between pattern 5 and 4A? • Even though pattern 5 uses conjunctions , it is different from pattern 4a . The main difference between pattern 4a and 5 is that pattern 5 requires conjunctions to balance the pairs in the sentences. • For example : God is day and night, winter and summer, war and peace, surfeit and hunger.
Structure of pattern 5 • Structure = A and B , C and D, E and F ( may be in any slot in the sentences) • A must be balanced with B. Conjunctions are used to balance the pairs.
What you should NOTdo ! • Even though I hate eating, I eat tomatoes or fruits or cakes for breakfast. ( This sentence does not belong to pattern 5 because it consist of series with variations. This is pattern 4a ! DON’T GET CONUFUED IT WILL HURT YOU ㅜ.ㅜ)
EXAMPLE # 1 They went to the store and bought chicken and fish, strawberries and bananas, Gatorade and water. This is an example of a pattern 5 sentence because the first pair contains meat, the second pair fruits and the third drinks.
EXAMPLE # 2 This summer we are going to Texas and Louisiana, New York and New Jersey, France and Germany. This is also another example of a pattern 5 sentence because each state in each of the pairs are located next to one another.
