  7. Discussion • How much motivation you have for research? • What factors influencing your decision to get involve in research? • What are the barriers to limit your involvement in research?

  8. Introduction of research concept • Reference • Kielhofner, G. (2006). Research in Occupational Therapy: Methods of inquiry for enhancing practice. F.A. Davis.

  9. Purpose of research • Research is a creative process of discovering and sharing new information • Research is both essential to and can support and improve occupational therapy practice

  10. Definition of research • “ A systematic and principled way of obtaining evidence (data, information) for solving health care problems” By Polgar and Thomas, S.A. 2000

  11. Definition of research (continued) • Systematic, principled, structured, logical • Involves a process of investigation or obtaining evidence in order to generate knowledge and to test theory • Study issues of importance and solve practical problems

  12. Obligation of OT to conduct research • Enable its members to offer high-quality services which will benefit the clients

  13. Necessity of research for professional recognition and support • Educational program • Reimbursement • It seems clear that as administrators and policymakers render decision about how health care providers are used and reimbursed, those disciplines with objective evidence of their effectiveness and efficiency will have a competitive advantage (1983, Christiansen, C.)

  14. Necessity of research for professional recognition and support • Without the development of a research base to refine and provide evidence about the value of its practice, occupational therapy simply will not survive, much less thrive, as a health profession

  15. Research supports practice • Generating foundational knowledge used by therapists • Etiology of illness • Providing evidence about the need for occupational therapy services • AIDS example, suicide example

  16. Research supports practice • Developing and testing theory that underlies practice • Movement study • Generating findings about the process and outcomes of therapy • Test development, clinical reasoning

  17. Think about your interested topics • What type of topics will it be? • What is the next step you will take?

  18. Grant writing • Example 1 : NHRI grant • Report • Publications
