Typically, the commercial opportunity of extracting grape seed constituents has been for chemicals known as polyphenols, including oligomericproanthocyanidins recognized as antioxidants. Human case reports and results from laboratory and animal studies show that grape seed extract may be useful to treat heart diseases such as high blood pressure and high cholesterol. RESEARCH CENTER Grape Seed Oil Extract is Nature's MOST POWERFUL ANTIOXIDANT The Discovery of proanthocyanidin is quite interesting in 1948, while working on his doctoral thesis, Dr. Jacques Masquelier discovered that peanuts contained proanthocyanidinbioflavoroids which were able to double the strength of blood vessels within a few hours after administration to laboratory animals. One year later, in 1949, this discovery was exploited for the preparation of a French pharmaceutical product for the treatment of weakened blood vessels in humans. Later, Dr. Masquelier came across the story of the famous French explorer, Jacques Cartier. The story is told that while Cartier was exploring Canada's Gulf of St. Lawrence with his crew from November 1534 to April 1535, having only biscuits and dried pork to eat, they found themselves developing the symptoms of what we now call scurvy. Cartier and his crew had been locked into the Gulf by ice and were unable to get out for weeks. Gradually they began to experience bleeding gums, spontaneous bruising, weakness, irritablity, vague muscle aches, and joint pains. Fortunately, for Cartier and his crew, they met a Quebec Indian who told them of a tea made from the bark and leaves of a large pine tree that grew in the area. The tea miraculously cured them of their ills. The following is the account as recorded in Voyages au Canada. Intrigued by the story, Dr. Masquelier began research on the bark of a similar tree, the maritime pine tree that grows in the southern regions of France. He discovered that the bark contained the bioflavonoid proanthocyanidin. In 1951, he patented a proanthocyanidin complex extracted from pine bark which he named pycnogenol. Nineteen years later in 1970, Dr. Masquelier patented a second proanthocyanidin complex, this time from grape seeds, which he had found to yield a ten percent higher concentration of the active prinicipal, proanthocyanidinbioflavonoids. Grape Seed Oil ( Also called grapeseed oil or grape oil ) is a vegetable oil pressed from the seeds of various varieties of Vitisvinifera grapes, an abundant by-product of winemaking.
