Special and General Revelation: LOOKING WITH NEW EYES
Special Revelation: Unique Encounters Religions: Writings, Teachings, Worship, Leaders, Nature General Revelation: millions of religious followers worldwide
Special Revelation: • Moses – ascending to the top of the mountain for prayer • Gautama Buddha – spending 6 years in meditation • Jesus – spending 40 days in the desert in prayer • Mohammad – staying in the desert caves
Revelation: • A paradigm shift in the perception of the world, • and of the place and purpose of human life in the world.
What is learned through revelation: • The commonly perceived reality is not ultimate. • There is a greater reality beyond the common one. • This greater reality is normally called “God” (Tao in Taoism and Nirvana in Buddhism). • God is conceived as a sum of all perfection: • Omnipotent (all-powerful) • Omniscient (all-knowing) • Benevolent (caring and compassionate) • Human life makes sense only in relationship to God.
Write-up: Explain how general revelation is different from special revelation. Homework: Define special and general revelation. Discuss how it works in specific cases: Choose three major religions. Discuss their founders. Discuss their teachings and practice.
