  1. HONEY BEESApis mellifera MAN’S MOST IMPORTANT INSECT

  2. Honey Bees • Are the only insects which make a product edible to man. • They pollinate over 90 crops. • A Cornell University study has estimated that honeybees annually pollinate more than $14 billion worth of seeds and crops in the United States, mostly fruits, vegetables and nuts. “Every third bite we consume in our diet is dependent on a honeybee to pollinate that food,” said Zac Browning, vice president of the American Beekeeping Federation.

  3. POLLINATION

  4. Pollination is an important step in the reproduction of seed plants. • It is the transfer of pollen grains from the male parts to the female parts of flowering plants.

It is used as a sealant for unwanted open spaces in the hive. • Propolis is marketed by health food stores as a traditional medicine, and for its claimed beneficial effect on humanhealth. Natural medicine practitioners often use propolis for the relief of various conditions, including inflammations, viral diseases, ulcers, superficial burns or scalds.

  22. BEE BREAD • Bee bread or bee pollen is the main source of food for most honey bees and their larvae. Bee bread consists of honey and pollens which are gathered by the worker bees. • Bee bread is used in naturopathic medicine traditions and as a nutritional supplement, although exposure may trigger allergic or anaphylactic reactions in sensitive people
