TEXAS STATE PLAN FOR THE EDUCATION OF GIFTED/TALENTED STUDENTS Students who participate in services designed for gifted/talented students will demonstrate skills in self-directed learning, thinking, research, and communication as evidenced by the development of innovative products and performances that reflect individuality and creativity and are advanced in relation to students of similar age, experience, or environment. High school graduates who have participated in services for gifted/talented students will have produced products and performances of professional quality as part of their program services.
HPISD TAG Program Mission Statement The Highland Park Independent School District’s Talented and Gifted program provides qualitatively differentiated curricula and challenging opportunities that promote individuality, creativity, and the development of innovative products in order to inspire students to become self-directed learners, high level thinkers, and effective communicators.
What differentiated curriculum does HPISD provide for TAG Students? • Identified TAG students are served in pull-out programs by campus specialists. • The Explorations program meets two hours weekly and provides a science, social studies, and language arts interdisciplinary curriculum. • The math program meets daily and provides curriculum that is advanced for the student’s grade level, accelerated in pace, and enriched with problem based learning experiences.
What are the benefits that students gain from participation in TAG programs? TheExplorationsprogram provides opportunities for students to • engage in discussion and collaborative efforts with their gifted peers • gain knowledge and insightful understanding about a variety of subjects through discovery and research • learn how to use technology tools while creating innovative products • develop communication skills by giving presentations to school and community audiences
The TAG Math curriculum is designed to • be an accelerated and enriched learning experience for students who often use creative and divergent strategies for problem solving and who need a faster pace for learning new concepts • facilitate learning, using a wide variety of resources to challenge and engage students • encourage and promote classroom discussion of mathematical ideas and problem solving strategies • create opportunities for students to use metacognition to explain math their individual approaches to solution finding • offer a variety of analytical strategies • expand the understanding and use of mathematical vocabulary.
