SPREP Program Strategy The focus areas are divided under the Secretariat’s two programs: • Islands Ecosystems • Pacific Futures
Program Goal: Pacific Island countries and territories able to manage their island resources and ocean ecosystems in a sustainable manner and that support life and livelihoods

Programme Goal: Pacific Island countries and territories able to plan and respond to threats and pressures on islands and ocean systems
Component 2.1:Managing multilateral environmental agreements and regional coordination mechanism Component 2.2:Environmental monitoring and reporting Component 2.3:Climate change, climate vulnerability, sea level rise and atmosphere Component 2.4:Waste Management and pollution control Component 2.5:Environmental policy and planning
Component 2.4: Waste Management and pollution control Objective: To assist and enhance the PICTs capacities to manage and respond to marine pollution, hazardous waste, solid waste, sewage and other land-based sources of pollution
What does SPREP do? • Support the regional work on the controlling of marine pollution • Support the management of hazardous substance and waste in the region • Support the regional work on the management of solid and liquid waste
Some of the waste management practices we have in the region include…
Work done in the hazardous waste area: • Assisting countries manage their hazardous waste by assessing and enhancing: • members’ capacities for effective management of hazardous materials, • improve compliance with international convention requirements and • eliminating hazards posed by existing waste stockpiles (POPs and ODS)
SPREP is assisting countries… • Implementing Phase II of the Persistent Organic Pollutants in Pacific Island Countries (POPs in PICs) project • Develop their National Implementation Plans (NIPs) as part of the requirement for the Stockholm Convention on POPs
Coordinate the regional implementation of the e-waste project • Administer the implementation of the Waigani and Basel Conventions (done through the BCRC)
Assist country deal with country specific issues (expired pharmaceuticals in Kiribati) • Provide technical advise and support to countries in meeting obligations under relevant MEAs
Phase I of the POPs in PICs project… Involved a survey of 13 Pacific Island Countries to identify • stockpiles of the POPs chemicals • other intractable pesticides
Phase II of POPs in PICs… Involved the reconnaissance assessment and physical removal of • POPs Chemicals • Intractable pesticides This work happened in July 2003 – December 2006
