Today’s Objective • SWBAT compare and contrast the products and reactants of photosynthesis and respiration. • SWBAT explain the impact of carbon dioxide accumulation on global warming
So where does all this oxygen come from?? • PLANTS performing PHOTOSYNTHESIS!
What does photosynthesis mean? • Photo = light • Synthesis = creating • Photosynthesis = creating with light Purpose: Plants use light to create sugars (glucose-C6H12O6)
What is photosynthesis? • The process in which plants convert light energy into chemical energy (sun glucose). • Occurs in the chloroplast
Guided Notes: Photosynthesis • Photosynthesis is how plants use sunlight to make oxygen and sugar. • Look familiar? • It’s just respiration in reverse! Reactants (what goes in) Products (what comes out) Water + Carbon Dioxide (H2O) (CO2) +ENERGY from sunlight Oxygen + Sugar (O2) (C6H12O6)
Products and Reactants in Photosynthesis • Reactants- Carbon Dioxide and Water • Products- Glucose and Oxygen • There is NO ATP gain during photosynthesis! • *****Remember the ATP Cycle*****
The Magic of Chloroplasts 1. Plants gather the sun’s energy with light-absorbing molecules called pigments. 2. Inside of chloroplasts the main pigment that is used is called chlorophyll.
Thylakiod: sac like membranes Stroma: space between thylakiods Grana: stack of thylakiods Chloroplast
Chlorophyll • 3. Chlorophyll is the part of the plant that gives plants their green color. Chlorophyll absorbs blue, violet, and red light, but reflects green light. • This is why plants are green. • Carotenereflects orange light. Where is chlorophyll found? - Inside the chloroplasts!
Within the chloroplast pictured above are disc like structures arranged in stacks called grana. The stack like membranes contains pigments that absorb light energy. The individual disc-like shaped structures labeled A are called ____. A. chlorophyll B. thylakoids C. stroma D. Golgi apparatus A B
Water enters the plant through the roots and travels up to the leaf through the veins. Water then travels to each cell through a process known as OSMOSIS.
Stomata Stomata are the little “holes” on a plant leaf that regulates the gas exchange in plants.
Carbon dioxide enters the leaf through the stomata. Carbon dioxide then travels to each cell through a process known as Diffusion.
Which structure regulates gas exchange during the processes of photosynthesis and respiration? A. Q B. R C. S D. T
Discussion Question • Why is photosynthesis important to YOU? ?
So what happens when you breathe? BUT IT’S NOT THIS SIMPLE…. Oxygen (O2) goes in Carbon dioxide (CO2) goes out
Why is cellular respiration important to YOU? • Breaks down the sugars we eat and oxygen animals get from producers to create ENERGY Reactants (what goes in) Products (what comes out) Oxygen + Sugar (O2) (C6H12O6) Water + Carbon Dioxide (H2O) (CO2) +ENERGY (ATP)!!
Why is cellular respiration important to Producers? • Animals produce the carbon dioxide needed by producers to create sugar (C6H12O6)
Oxygen Glucose Carbon Dioxide water BIG PICTURE
BIG PICTURE • Plants release oxygen • Animals bring in oxygen • Plants create glucose • Animals eat glucose • Animals release carbon dioxide • Plants bring in carbon dioxide
Which compound is a product of photosynthesis and a reactant for cellular respiration? A. carbon dioxide B. water C. glucose D. energy
Why are photosynthesis and cellular respiration often considered opposites? A. Photosynthesis produces twice as many ATP molecules as cellular respiration does. B. Water is released during photosynthesis and consumed during cellular respiration. C. Photosynthesis occurs during the day, and cellular respiration occurs at night. D. Oxygen is produced during photosynthesis and used during cellular respiration
Which molecule provides most of the energy used to drive chemical reactions in cells? A. DNA B. RNA C. ATP D.ADP
Which word summary word equation best describes a process that directly requires light energy? A. water + carbon dioxide glucose + oxygen B. glucose + glucose maltose + water C. glucose alcohol + carbon dioxide + ATP D. water + glucose oxygen + carbon dioxide ATP
Products and Reactants in Photosynthesis • Reactants- Carbon Dioxide and Water • Products- Glucose and Oxygen • There is NO ATP gain during photosynthesis! • *****Remember the ATP Cycle*****
