  11. hypotheses • Intellectual retrieval of documents by browsing the OPAC will produce more relevant documents than their retrieval by browsing the shelf • Intellectual retrieval of relevant documents by browsing the OPAC will take a shorter time than their intellectual retrieval by browsing the shelf • Users of academic libraries already prefer OPAC browsing to shelf browsing, a tendency which will even increase in the future

  12. results • The OPAC browsing averagely produced 3 times more relevant documents than the shelf browsing • The OPAC browsing of relevant documents averagely took ½ the time consumed by the shelf browsing of relevant documents • The preference of retrieving documents by OPAC browsing is increasing while the shelf browsing is decreasing
