  12. Binding of Isaac - Akedah The Akedah is perhaps the most startling example of a “type” in the Bible. It is the famed incident of Abraham offering his son Isaac in Genesis chapter 22. Macrocode: It sets up for an anticipatory event or action that will occur in the future.

  16. The Binding of Isaac Law of First Mention – The first occurrence of a word in the Scripture is usually very significant in the overall design. It seems profoundly significant that this account includes the first occurrence of the word love in the Scripture.

After These Things • This phrase is generally used as an adverb or • conjunction. • After the things from chapters 11 through 21, more • specifically after the birth of Isaac in Chapter 21. • “After these things” is the Hebrew way of saying • “eventually”. It describes an undefined period of • time having passed; but usually it is a substantial • amount of time.

  20. Burnt Offering • Hebrew olah; i.e., “ascending,” the whole being consumed by fire, and regarded as ascending to God while being consumed. Part of every offering was burnt in the sacred fire, but this was wholly burnt, a “whole burnt offering.” • It was the most frequent form of sacrifice, and apparently the only one mentioned in the book of Genesis. • Abel (Gen. 4:3, 4) • Noah (Gen. 8:20) • Abraham (Gen. 22:2, 7, 8, 13) • Hebrews in Egypt (Ex. 10:25)

  26. thine only son Isaac • This is the first mention of “only son” • Isaac was the only son of promise • The only son of Sarah, and the only one here • Ishmael left some years before (Genesis 21:9-10). • His other sons were not yet born (Genesis 25:1-6).

  27. Land of Moriah • Moriah = “the manifestation of God” • Area referred to today as the Temple Mount in • Jerusalem • Mt. Moriah was located in Jerusalem, where • Solomon built the temple.

Rose up early in the morning • There is no delay he starts his journey the • very next morning. • This event shows an immediate response • and the obedience of Abraham. • There are four people going on this journey, • Abraham, Isaac, and two young men. • One of the young men was most likely • Eleazer, Abraham’s trusted servant.

  31. The Third Day Genesis 22:4-5 4 Then on the third day Abraham lifted up his eyes, and saw the place afar off. 5 And Abraham said unto his young men, Abide ye here with the ass; and I and the lad will go yonder and worship, and come again to you.

  34. Was it a stall? I and the lad will go yonder and worship, and come again to you Abraham believed that He and Isaac would both return to the young men. Abraham knew of the resurrection and believed that Isaac would return with him, perhaps in a resurrected state. Abraham knew that God had promised that his future generations would be through Isaac. In the eyes of Abraham if God wanted him to sacrifice Isaac then Abraham did not have a problem – God had a problem.

  35. Carried the Wood Genesis 22:6 And Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering, and laid it upon Isaac his son; and he took the fire in his hand, and a knife; and they went both of them together.

  36. Wood, Fire, and Knife Isaac was to carry the wood on which he was to be sacrificed as Christ was to carry His own cross on which He was to be sacrificed. Isaac was about 30 - 37 years old at this time. Fire symbolizes judgment Knife symbolizes the execution of judgment and of sacrifice An emphasis - two men went up the hill Isaac shows a loving submission and goes willingly obeying his father. They went in agreement - together

  37. The Lamb where is the lamb for a burnt offering The answer to this question is very prophetic. Abraham may have known that he was acting out a profound future event, vs. 14. My son, God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering: What will God provide for the offering? Himself – as the lamb, His first public introduction was by John the Baptist.

  38. “Father Where Is The Lamb?” • Isaac was somewhere • between 25 – 37 years old • Would not have seemed all • that strange to Abraham, • human sacrifice was normal • among the pagans • Isaac did not resist or • demand his rights • Parallels with the Messiah • going silently to the Cross • Isaac was no Messiah • The appointed time for a • Messiah had not yet come

And Abraham lifted up his eyes, and looked, and behold another a ram caught in a thicket by his horns: and Abraham went and took the ram, and offered him up for a burnt offering in the stead of his son.

  42. Substitute Ram Abraham lifted up his eyes, and looked, and behold behind hima ram caught in a thicket by his horns: God does more than provide a lamb, He would Himself become the lamb two thousand years later on this spot. This is why there was a ram in the thicket and not a lamb, the ram is a substitution.

  43. Prophecy Abraham called the name of that place Jehovahjireh: as it is said to this day, In the mount of the LORD it shall be seen. Abraham saw the place afar off in time and saw God offer Himself for mankind. He knew that he was acting out prophecy and named the place accordingly.

  44. The Signature Mount Moriah was the greatest trial in Abraham’s life Mount Moriah was also the greatest triumph in Abraham’s life.

  45. The Signature Abraham returned unto his young men, and they rose up and went together to Beersheba Where is Isaac?

  46. The Signature • Naturally, we infer that Isaac also joined them and that • there were four who traveled back to Beersheba. • However the person Isaac has been edited out of the • record, by the Holy Spirit, from the time he is offered • on the mount until he is united with his bride, two • chapters later. • Christ is taken away from the earth after he was • sacrificed for our sins however will be united with his • bride two days later! (Hosea 6:2) After two days will he revive us: in the third day he will raise us up, and we shall live in his sight.

  47. The Signature A wonderful prophetic story looking forward to the Messiah
