Description • Sodium hypochlorite is a chemical commonly found in bleach, water purifiers, and cleaning products • Bleach is a chemical that removes colors or whitens, often via oxidation
Symptoms of Poisoning • Airways and lungs • Coughing (from the fumes) • Eyes, ears, nose, mouth, and throat • Burning, red eyes • Gagging sensation • Pain in the mouth • Pain in the throat • Possible burns on esophagus • Heart and blood vessels • Chest pain • Low blood pressure • Slow heartbeat • Shock • Nervous system • Delirium • Coma • Skin • Irritation of the exposed area • Burns • Blistering • Stomach and intestines • Stomach or abdominal pain • Vomiting
Cure • For swallowed poison: • A tube thru the nose into the stomach to empty the stomach • Endoscopy • Fluids by IV • Medicine to reverse the effect of the poison • For inhaled poison, treatment may include: • Breathing tube • Bronchoscopy • Oxygen • For skin exposure, treatment may include: • Irrigation, perhaps every few hours for several days • Surgical removal of burned skin • Transfer to a hospital that specializes in burn care
Dangers of Bleach • NEVER combine sodium hypochlorite with ammonia or use at the same time • A toxic gas, a pure form of Chlorine, is produced and can cause chocking and serious breathing problems; some potentially explosive compounds are also made • Swallowing, smelling, or touching household bleach will likely not cause any significant problems
Pure Bleach • Destroys tissue and causes red blood cells to burst • Can release a toxic overload of potassium that can cause a heart attack • If injected into blood, it can be fatal
Other Uses for Bleach • Weed Killer • Pregnancy Test • Cleaner • Disinfectant • Water Purifier • Household Cleaner

Case Number 2 • Kimberly Saenz • Injecting bleach into at least 10 patients’ bloodstreams (5 died) • Charged with 5 aggravated assaults and if convicted can face the Death penalty. • Two patients that had been injected saw Saenz put a weird and unusual substance into a syringe and inject it into 3 patients. • Traces of bleach were found in the dialysis machine tubing
