  1. Dipterocarpus Alatus Roxb. -- or -- Hairy Leafed Apitong -- or -- Yang-Na

  2. Size • The hairy leafed apitong is a medium to large size tree • It is usually 30 – 40 m tall • Leaves generally don’t appear until 20 m up the trunk of a full grown adult tree • Trunk is approximately 150 cm in diameter

  3. Territory • Native to deciduous and evergreen forests in: • Cambodia • Laos • Vietnam • Thailand • Burma • Phillipines • Grows at altitudes of 200-600 m • Likes to grow near rivers

  4. Flowers & Leaves • Flowers are usually white with a pink, purple or red stripe down the center • Leaves have a length of 3 - 4.5 cm • Leaves are green and have an elliptical-oblong shape

  5. Seeds • The tree produces 130-500 seeds per kg • They are of a spherical shape with two leaves attached • This allows the seeds to “helicopter” to their destination

  6. Uses • Next to teak, the Yang-Na is the most important timber tree in Thailand • Also important for its oleoresin production, used in paint, varnish, and lacquer • The oil from the tree is used as a fixative in perfumes • The taungya reforestation method in Thailand uses the hairy-leafed apitong to rehabilitate wasteland, as the organic matter and NPK (nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium) content are higher in soils under this tree
