Media and the Way it is Changing the Children of Today By Alexander Mitchell 3rd Period Advisor: Kate Sanner
The Question What are the effects that media has on children?
How I Narrowed Down my Topic -I began with a general question of “What does media do? Are its’ effects positive or negative?” and from there I expanded my ideas until finally forming my current question. -As I began my research I came to find a question that many ask about media, which is “Is Media harming children, or is it actually benefiting them in some way?”
What My Interest are in this Field of Study -To find whether or not media has an overall positive or negative effect on children. -To find whether or not the effects are long term or temporary.
Some Background on my Research -Media comes in all forms, from TV to Video Games. -TV viewing is rapidly replacing children’s activities, so much so that many researcher fear it is leading to obesity and lack of social skills in children. -Not all forms of media are negative, some media is necessary to children who require certain educational needs or certain forms of education.
Some Interesting Facts That I Have Learned So Far -On average, kids spend about four to six hours a day watching TV, DVD’s or videos. -In 63% of households, the TV is usually on during meals -Video games are seen as the most violent form of media that has the greatest effect on children. -Kids who have a TV in their bedroom spend an average of 1.5 hours more watching TV than other children. -Excessive TV watching is linked to poor grades, poor behavior, sleep problems and several other issues. -In 2008, Kevin McCullough lead a campaign against the Xbox 360 for the game Mass Effect.
The Use of Annotated Sources in my Research -Annotated sources have helped to narrow my research question. -By using my annotated sources I have been able to further my research, and gained new insight on my topic. -Many of the annotated sources have provided statistics that will help support my topic.
My Objectives -I plan on creating a list of possible schools to survey in Howard County along with a letter so that a school might be willing to participate. -I plan on getting an interview with someone in the this field of study, so that I may gain more information and insight on my topic. -To gain more information that does not have a biased view on media.
My Personal Goals • What I am Looking to Accomplish -My goal is to complete the preliminary plan, so I can conduct my research with a timetable in mind. -I am looking to find a school to not only survey, but also use as a place to conduct any other research for my topic.
Most Useful Source of Information -Most of my useful data for my topic has been from medical databases that have a section on child psychology. -One such useful source that provides fully supported and unbiased information is a medical database called PubMed.
Objectives -To provide an unbiased view of media. -To provide information so that people are more educated about media. Goals -Obtain enough information so that the positive and negative effects of media are supported. -Inform the public about media, and effects it can have on children. My Intentions Through Research
Summary and Conclusion -The effects of media can have both positive and negative effects on children. -Much of the data on Media can be biased, but through my research I hope to provide a view that addresses both sides of media. -More research must be conducted before any real conclusion can be made about the effects media can have on children. -Do not use media excessively.
