KEY PROBLEMS • New graduate Occupational Therapists and Social Workers were not attracted to working in Mental Health services as they did not have the skills or competencies. • They were also not welcomed by the teams for the same reasons. • We currently employ 48 Social Workers and 35 Occupational Therapists • Project Drivers Included: • Lack of new graduates interested and available for Mental Health services • High turnover with new staff barely staying two years • Those new graduates that were employed struggled to understand their roles and actively contribute to the team for > one year • Mental Health was not seen as an attractive career option for these professions

INNOVATIONS IMPLEMENTED • Implementation of a national Postgraduate Certificate in Health (Allied Mental Health) Programme (20 places) • Three year pilot program currently, funded by the Clinical Training Agency (CTA) • First Allied Health Post Graduate Program funded by CTA • Designed for Occupational Therapists and Social Workers with less than two years practice in Mental Health (not necessarily new graduates) • Two 800 level papers delivered as an integrated practice-focussed programme over a 9 month period • Combination of e-learning, two on-site modules and support from both an Academic Supervisor (SW background) and a Clinical Supervisor (OT background) currently working in Mental Health • The Clinical Supervisor role (0.4 FTE) is currently a jointly funded role with the provider and ADHB

OUTCOMES SO FAR • Askelepios program enrolments • Use of blue print underspend money to develop and expand program participation • Better educated staff, increased confidence so clinical conversations start at a different point • Cost neutral for the managers due to CTA program financial support, they also now want to keep graduates post completion of program • Keeping the staff in the workforce (not seeing the usual “2 year turnaround”) • Staff are returning to Askelepios after overseas work due to their positive experience with us

LESSONS LEARNT • What we recommend to other hospitals on this topic • “Use it or lose it”, it is still a pilot program • Interprofessional learning of the disciplines working together is an excellent model to facilitate teamwork and collaborative learning • Graduates start to look for this kind of support, with Askelepios beginning to be a preferred employer for positions in Mental Health for these disciplines • The blend of academic (e-learning and classroom) and work-place post graduate learning suits adult learners and allows service continuity • Program Details • http://www.vuw.ac.nz/nsemid/degrees/amh.aspx
