  3. 8th Grade Four Core Classes for 58 minutes • Math 8 or Compacted Year 2 or Geometry • Science 8 or Physical Science • Social Studies • Language Arts 5th Core Class for 58 minutes • Reading Intervention • Art 8 • Gateway to Technology • Foreign Language Related Arts Elective choices for 53 minutes • Music • Study Center • Physical Education 8 • Technology Solutions

Language Arts 8 • 58 minutes • Emphasis on nonfiction reading comprehension • Introduces students to literary analysis • Focuses on the research process • Development of expository writing skills • Extends word study • Reading a variety of literary genres • Responding to reading through literary analysis • Writing of an expository, alternate perspective, and persuasive essays

  5. Math for 8th Graders • 58 minutes • Math 8 • Compacted Year 2 – this follows a progression from 7th grade compacted math year 1. Students receive HS credit for their Algebra I at completion. • Geometry • Compacted Year 2 and Geometry will be included in the calculation of their HS GPA.

  6. Science 8 • 58 minutes • Force and motion, space, earth, genetics Physical Science • Focus acceleration only • Chemistry, physics, astronomy, sound and light, energy transformation • This course will be included in the calculation of their HS GPA. • Science advisement letter • Test dates: 4/12 and 4/15

  7. Social Studies • 58 minutes • American History from the Revolution to Reconstruction. • Washington D.C. trip as part of the curriculum. • Four nights: one night traveling & three in a hotel. • Spring trip – May 2015 • More information to come Fall of 2014!

  8. The Fifth Core Period • 58 Minute 5th core class • Students must choose between: • Foreign Language • Art 8 • Reading Intervention • Gateway to Technology (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math)

  9. Foreign Languages • Level I - Foreign Languages • These courses will be included in the calculation of HS GPA. • Spanish I offered at DMS (no previous experience in Spanish is required) • Other Level I FL classes to be offered at a high school include: German I, Japanese I, Latin I, Chinese I and French I. • Personal Transportation to HS required.

  10. Art 8 • Art 8 is a full year course. • Drawing • Painting • Print Making • Ceramics

  11. Reading Intervention • This is a course that has a focus on reading strategies, reading for information, test taking skills and note taking. • Both fiction and non-fiction comprehension will be addressed.

  12. Gateway to Technology • Interdisciplinary course • Real world problems • Automation and robotics • Design and modeling • Energy and environment • Other topics

  13. Music (full year) Band Choir Strings Study Center (full year or A-day/B-day) Physical Education 8 (A-day/B-day) Technology Solutions (A-day/B-day) Related Arts 8 – One Period
