  2. Endocrine gland Highly vascular organ. Surrounded by the pretracheal layer of the deep neck fascia (Thyroid sheath). Thyroid Gland

  3. Right lobe, left lobe, and isthmus. The thyroid moves as one with the larynx and the trachea. Thyroid capsule Thyroid sheath (pretracheal fascia) Suspensory ligament of the thyroid gland (Berry ligament): fixes the lobes to the cricoid cartilage.

  4. Arteries • Superior thyroid artery: a branch of the ECA • Inferior thyroid artery:a branch of the thyrocervical trunk. • Thyroid ima artery: Arises from the bracheocephalic trunk or the aortic arch.

  5. Superior thyroid vein: into the IJV Middle thyroid vein: into the IJV Inferior thyroid vein: into the bracheocephalic vein Veins

  6. Usually 4 in number Lie within the capsule of the gland in its posterior surface The two superior: more constant in position, at the level of the middle of the posterior border. The two inferior: vary in position Parathyroid glands

  7. Cartilaginous and membranous tube Starts from the lower border of the cricoid cartilage Ends by dividing into two main bronchi (Carina point) at the level of the 4th and 5ththoracic vertebrae Trachea

  8. Trachea in the neck • Blood supply: inferior thyroid arteries • Nerve supply: vagus, recurrent laryngeal, sympethatic trunk

  9. Esophagus • Muscular tube • 25 cm long • Begins at the level of the cricoid cartilage, C6 • From the pharynx to stomach

  10. Esophagus in the neck • Blood supply: inferior thyroid arteries and veins • Nerves: RLN and sympathetic trunks
