  1. Abiotic/ Biotic Factors and Populations Adapted fromMs. Amanda Avery’s lesson 8th grade Science 2012

  2. Important Vocabulary(write definition and draw a pic of each word on a piece of notebook paper.) Ecosystem: Habitat/Environment made up of living and non-living elements Abiotic factors: non-living chemical and physical elements of an ecosystem Biotic factors: living elements of an ecosystem Organism- living thing Population- group of organisms of the same species living together Community- several different populations living together in an ecosystem

  3. Flow Chart (continuous flow of energy)-Draw on same piece of paper Organisms Populations (same species) Community (different species) Biosphere (world) Ecosystems (habitats)

  4. Abiotic Factors-Copy down on samepaper. • Physical/Chemical elements of Ecosystem: • Examples: • Sun • Soil • Water • Oxygen • Temperature

  5. Biotic Factors – continue to copy • Biological elements of Ecosystem: • Ecosystems: • Plants • Fungi • Animals • Bacteria

  6. Populations (write definition and draw a pic of each word on a piece of notebook paper.) • population density: measures the number of individual organisms living in a defined space • Limited by: abiotic and biotic factors • Density-dependent limiting factors: effect larger populations more • Examples: competition (for food, water, shelter & space), predation, parasitism, and disease • Density-independent limiting factors: effect both large and small populations equally • Examples: mostly abiotic (such as weather changes), human activities (such as pollution), and natural disasters (such as fires)
