  2. The American Revolution • GOOD LUCK – at it’s onset, nobody gave the rebellion a chance • British advantages: • Population • Weapons • Highly trained army/navy • Resources/Supplies

  3. British troops in Boston • Creation of minutemen for security • General Gage in charge of British forces; raiding local stores for ammunition • Tensions rising throughout the colonies

  4. The American Revolution • Young Boston doctor hears of news and warns the Patriots • William Dawes, Paul Revere, & Samuel Prescott ride out to warn • Church bells ring out in code • Dawes & Revere captured by the British

  6. The American Revolution • British confronted by minutemen at the Lexington Green (15 minutes) • News of the battle spreads and more men come • Brits move towards Concord, but more Americans than expected • Start to retreat • Ambushed the entire way back to Boston

The American Revolution • Battle of Saratoga (N.Y.) – Spring of 1777 • British generals decide to attack from the north and south • “Gentleman” John Burgoyne and his “stuff” gets bogged down in northern N.Y.; Howe is tied up with skirmishes in the backwoods from militia • Americans under Benjamin Gates capture Burgoyne at Saratoga; British no longer venture far from guns and security of the coast

  12. Yorktown 16,000 French & Americans Sept. ’81 Patriots and French surround British on all sides Cornwallis surrenders, sends his 2nd in command; to surrender; Washington refuses to accept The American Revolution
