Bellwork: Draw the graph and answer the question • The graph shows the rate of activity for the enzyme catalase at different temperatures. Catalase helps convert hydrogen peroxide to oxygen and water. The rate of catalase activity is directly related to the percent increase in oxygen. • Based on the graph, what conclusions can be made about the functioning of catalase?
CO: I will understand and explain the process and purpose of transcription.LO: I will write notes and will create a mind map about Transcription.
Let’s get some things straight… • Replication- to make an exact copy • Replication is like making a photocopy • Transcription- to transfer from one recording form to another • Transcription is like taking notes (same information, different form)
Well… • Copies are good to have as a backup—it’d be bad if something happened to DNA • You can just put down the part of the information you need—shorter/simpler Think of it like this: DNA = master copy RNA = blueprints…you don’t need the blueprints for the whole house to build the foundation
Central DogmaWe’re only talking about the first part today Translation Transcription DNA RNA Protein Ribosome Nucleus
Transcription (big ideas) • Is the first step in making a protein (polypeptide) • Occurs in the nucleus • DNA is used to make RNA • RNA is then sent out into the cell to make proteins • It’s usually just a section of the DNA strand (gene) that codes for one specific protein
There are three main differences between DNA and RNA:1) The sugar in RNA is ribose instead of deoxyribose.2) RNA is single-stranded.3) RNA contains uracilinstead of thymine.

Summarize the DNA to RNA base pairing rules in exactly 8 words.
Messenger RNA (mRNA) carries copies of instructions from DNA in the nucleus to the ribosome to make proteins.
Practice Replication and Transcription • We’re going to make a “Protein Synthesis Tri-fold” • Follow my directions, step by step
Mind Map Example • Word bank: lipid, fatty acid, biomolecule, protein, enzyme, carbohydrate, ring, chain, Nitrogen, monosaccharide, amino acid, polypeptide Fatty acid chain nitrogen ring monosaccharide lipid Amino acid carbohydrate enzyme = Biomolecule protein polypeptide
Create your own mind mapExplain connection on the arrows • Word bank: transcription, nucleus, DNA, mRNA, gene, adenine, guanine, cytosine, thymine, uracil, nucleotide, nucleic acid, helicase, replication
Transcription Model (teacher guide) • I need a person for A T G T C A at the front of the room • I need people to form a complementary DNA strand • Who wants to be helicase? • Now I need people to form a complementary RNA strand • DNA polymerase please stand up…
