Cornell Notes: The Roman Empire
Big Idea • The Romans made great advances in many different areas that kept their empire strong.
I. Location • Located around the Mediterranean Sea: Europe, North Africa, & Western Asia. • The Romans controlled the Mediterranean Sea to control trade Europe Asia Africa Mediterranean Sea
II. Rome’s Emperors • Rome: ruled by emperors instead of elected leaders. • Augustus Caesar: 1st emperor of Rome • After the death of Julius Caesar, war occurred between his friends & enemies • Augustus stopped the wars & restored order. • Roman emperors had great powers to keep the peace
Julius Caesar: Roman general killed for having too much power. War was the result, and Augustus was the solution.
III. Laws • Laws made the empire strong by providing order • First Roman Laws: The Twelve Tables • Laws written down & kept on public display: to prevent unfair treatment • Laws protected rights of citizens
Laws were written down and displayed in public. No one could ever have the excuse that they didn’t know what the laws were!
IV. Citizenship • Citizens: vote in elections, pay taxes, serve in the army when needed. • Citizenship very important to Romans. “Proud to be Roman” • Given as a gift to conquered people.
V. Engineering • Romans built things to improve life for people • Roads: for easy transport & travel • Aqueducts: channels that carried water into cities.
VI. Art & Architecture • Romans used Greek ideas • Used large and strong buildings : arches, vaults, domes • Used columns and open spaces
Haiku poem • A Haiku poem is a short poem with three lines. It follows a specific pattern of syllables and does not need to rhyme. “Julius Caesar, (line 1: 5 syllables) leader of Rome, was killed for (line 2: 7 syllables) being too powerful” (line 3: 5 syllables) In total, the Haiku poem should have 17 syllables.
Roman Empire notes: Interactions • 1. Draw a detailed picture about something from the notes. Explain your picture • 2. Write a “what if” statement using an idea from the notes. Answer the statement. • 3. Write a “Haiku” Poem about a topic from the notes. (remember: 3 lines, 17 syllables total) • 4. Why would a Republic be better than an Empire? Why would an Empire be better than a Republic? Answer both questions.
Assignment #1: on a separate sheet of paper. • Write an acrostic poem, using your notes as sources of information. • Each letter must start a sentence that describes something from the notes. • Add a picture to decorate your poem. ROMAN
