History of the Catacombs • The official name of the catacombs is l’Ossuaire Municipal. • In the 17th century, disease and rates where everywhere due to the overpopulated cemeteries • It wasn’t until the 18th century that it was decided that large underground tunnels would be created to house the bones. • Moving the bones started in 1786 and ended in 1788. • Over 6 million bones are in the catacombs • Alexandre Lenoir came up with the idea of the catacombs and oversaw most of the huge project,
Historical Figures • Charles 10th was fascinated by the catacombs, and he threw wild parties in the tunnels • Napoleon the 3rd and his son visited the catacombs in 1860. • François 1st, emperor of Austria, visited the catacombs in 1814. • The French Resistance during World War 2 hid from the Nazis in the catacombs.
Catacombs Today • Sadly, bones are taken from their resting place to be sold or kept as collectors items. • Many tourism centers guide people 20 meters below ground to see the millions of bones • The Catacombs are not as famous as the Eiffel Tower, but the catacombs have been bringing tourists in since 1867. • There are over 300km of tunnels underground. Hard to believe the French did that with no power tools.
