Information for Scientific and Community • Collaboration and Advancement Allen Macklin Pacific Marine Environmental Lab Seattle, Washington Bernard Megrey Alaska Fisheries Science Ctr Seattle, Washington
Vision • To create a searchable web-based database of information describing research on the North Pacific ecosystem. • A one-stop resource where investigators can go to find out everything that is being done on a species, on a topic, who is doing it and where they are doing it.
Goal Facilitate data sharing and promote research and information coordination among North Pacific scientists, managers, research projects and communities.
Objectives • Determine what data exist • Determine where data are located • Identify who holds the data • Provide standardized descriptions of the data holdings using FGDC format • Develop an indexed and annotated catalog (metadatabase) • Make the metadatabase available through various mechanisms including the WWW • Develop data query and delivery tools via GIS map-based constructs • Provide live links to data when they exist
Project Management • Co-direction by Bernard Megrey (NOAA/AFSC) and Allen Macklin (NOAA/PMEL) • Technical coordination byKimberly Bahl (University of Washington JISAO) andDan Klawitter (Macrostaff) • Partial resources provided by NOAA Fisheries-Oceanography Coordinated Investigations (FOCI)
History • Founded in 1997 as the "Bering Sea Ecosystem Biophysical Metadatabase" in response to a call from the National Research Council. Support from NOAA/ESDIM. • Further development and expansion in 1999-2001 with support from NPMR and in 2002 with support from NPRB. • Transition to "North Pacific Ecosystem Metadatabase" began in 2002, with support of PICES and funding from NOAA/ESDIM,.

Metadata Holdings • The metadatabase presently contains 1861 records, including 183 records that reference NPRB, GLOBEC, EVOS, and SSL proposals, data, progress reports, feature articles, radio programs, workshops, and scientific publications.
NPMRB/NPRB Objectives • Archive metadata from NPMRB and NPRB investigators into the metadatabase. • Archive additional metadata pertaining to the North Pacific and its adjacent marine regions. • Improve metadata search capabilities. • Publish the metadatabase on the WWW and through other media. • Provide support to, and cooperate with, the NPRB and other North Pacific agencies, institutions and programs.
Methods • Review funded proposals. • Establish a timeline for data availability. • Populate the metadatabase with NPRB metadata. • Maintain dialog with PIs throughout their study window to optimize the metadatabase. • Enhance search capabilities of the metadatabase by location and time, and enabling sub selection of returned records. • Extend metadatabase by conducting active and passive data searches. • Maintain contact with the NPRB Executive Director.

The geographic area of interest can be selected with this interactive map. Use of ARCIMS and GIS Mapping Tools
Search results are delivered as geo-referenced hot links to the actual metadata record(s). Use of ARCIMS and GIS Mapping Tools
Future Plans • Continue the expansion of the metadatabase's geographic coverage from the Bering Sea to the North Pacific Ocean. • Cooperate with international oceanographic data centers (ODCs) to create a "distributed databases" search capability. • Enhance GIS-based data query and delivery. • Establish stable funding.
How Can You Contribute? • Tell us if you or your colleagues have data on the North Pacific ecosystem. • Submit a form describing the data. • Be available to answer questions we may have about your metadata. • Submit updates as new data become available.
Important! • Please bear in mind that we are NOT interested in the actual data… • Rather, we plan to report the existence of your data with a metadata description. • Data will stay under your control. • Our role is to help others locate and understand your data. Useful collaborations may result!
