  3. Now is When it Counts! • FRESHMAN GRADES COUNT!! • For graduation credit • For college admissions • For advancement to higher level in math and world language

High School Graduation Requirements • Subjects Credits • English 40 • Math (including 10 credits Alg 1, or Standards) 20 • Social Studies 35 • Science (1 year of life science and 1 year of physical)20 • 10 Credits in two fields 20 • Visual Performing Arts (VPA) • Vocational Applied Arts • World Language • Health 5 • Physical Education(10 credits during 9th grade) 20 • Electives 80 • Total credits required 240 • Students must also pass the CA High School Exit Exam

Scheduling Tips • Look at the Guide to Program Planning carefully • Choose classes wisely • Students need to earn a minimum of a “C” or higher to advance to the next level • If a student has earned a “C” in math or world language in 8th grade, we recommend that they repeat the same course in their 9th grade year • Grades of “D” or lower, do not count for college • Student needs to attend summer school for remediation purposes

Steps to Success . . . • Choose Your Classes Carefully • Read class prerequisites • Speak with current teachers for recommendations • Balance school schedule FIRST • Keep grades up • Contact teacher at first sign of unsatisfactory grade (via phone or email) • Repeat classes if student earns a “D” or “F” grade • Tutoring information is available in the counseling office and career center • Set Goals

  7. SAMPLE 9TH GRADE SCHEDULE • English 9 • World Geography/Health • PE 9 (or Dance 1 or Frosh Weights) • Math (Pre-Algebra, Transitions to Algebra, Geometry, Algebra 2) • Science (Integrated Phy. Sci, Biology or Acc. Biology) • World Language (American Sign Lang, French, German, Japanese, Spanish) • Elective (Art 1, Theatre Arts 1, Culinary Arts, Speech and Debate, TV Productions, Computer 1 & 2, Internet/HTML, VS.Net programming, Chorus, Symphonic Band) • *Optional Zero period: Elective *Note: Zero period is not recommended for students who plan to participate in Sports

Sci, Biology or Acc. Biology (must meet pre-reqs) • World Language • Optional zero period: Elective

KEYS TO ACADEMIC SUCCESS • Individualize your student’s schedule: keep in mind abilities, interests, learning styles and study habits • Student should pace him/herself- balance classes • Four-year plan: start slow and end strong • Reminder: High School is a lot more difficult than middle school (there is more emphasis on tests than homework) • Expect 2-3 hours of homework / night • More emphasis on critical thinking skills/conceptualizing; less on rote memory • Encourage your student to use a planner • Check “coursedocs” on MV website for assignments • Student should seek out teacher for help • Tutor lists available • Student and parent contact teacher at first sign of trouble

GET INVOLVED: Broaden your education to include a variety of experiences: • Athletics: Attend Sports info night (March 17th 7-9 pm) • Frosh Cheer Tryouts (April 14th-18th) • Band & Marching Band (contact www.mvhigh.net/keynoters) • Chorus • Dance Tryouts (March 19th from 3:30-6 pm) • Speech and Debate: summer institute (contact Mr. Matley) • Clubs: club faire in fall • Leadership (run for office or interview in fall)

REGISTRATION • Students return course selection forms to their middle school counselors on March 19th • Counselors receive placement recommendations for Math and World Language from Middle Schools in June • Information for registration will be mailed to your home this summer • Students pick up schedule at Monte Vista in August during registration and attend freshman orientation with Link Crew
