What is a Quartile? • Quartiles break a data set in into fourths, • or four equal parts. • Similar to a quarter within a dollar • (and all other examples from above), • each quartile represents 25%. • So, if 100% of a data set is broken down into four equal parts, then there are "breaks“ at 25%, 50%, and 75%. • The breaks are more formally called the • first quartile, second quartile, and • third quartile.

What is the IQR of the data below? Solution: The first quartile is 132.5; the third quartile is 142.5. The IQR is 10 (142.5 - 132.5). This value indicates that the values of the middle 50% of the data vary by 10.
