Origins • First coined in 1970 by Robert K. Greenleaf (1904-1990). • In his essay entitled ‘The Servant as Leader’. • A native of Indiana served most of his life in management research, development, & education. • Influential consultant to leading Corporations & Institutions in the USA.
Constitutional & legal basis in Kenya • Article 73 of the Constitution • Art. 73 (1) (b) – authority assigned to a state officer vests in the state officer the responsibility to serve the people rather than to rule over them. • Art. 73(2) stipulating the guiding principles of leadership & integrity. • Objectivity and impartiality in decision making.
