Goals • Bottom-up processing: To get students to recognize the parts of the passage they didn’t understand. • Grammatical awareness: Encourage an awareness of the differences between content words and function words. • Phonological awareness: Encourage an awareness of the reductions that native speakers make.

Fill in the Blanks • The polygraph machine, the old fashioned lie detector, ______ measures physical reactions related to anxiety, ______ measures your heart rate, your blood pressure, the sweatiness ______ palms, ______ you're breathing, how quickly you're breathing. It's ______ ______ ______ eighty years, there aren't actually very many good, rigorous studies of it, but our National Academy of Sciences ______ a big report on it seven years, six years ago. And they concluded from the ______ of really good studies ______ laboratory settings, the polygraph seemed to be accurate about seventy five to eighty percent ______. Now, that's in laboratory settings. We don't know how well it works ______, in the real world. The fMRI people will claim seventy to ninety percent effectiveness in the lab. I think ______ some problems with that data, but again, like polygraph, we don't know ______ good it is outside the lab.

It's been around for over eighty years, there aren't actually very many good, rigorous studies of it, but our National Academy of Sciences did a big report on it seven years, six years ago. And they concluded from the handful of really good studies that in laboratory settings, the polygraph seemed to be accurate about seventy five to eighty percent of the time.
