New GCSEs The new unitised GCSEs have regulations relating to: • Terminal assessments • Re-sitting • Certification *Unit Directory*
Terminal Assessment Rule • At least 40% of the assessment must be taken in the examination series in which the qualification is certificated • Any assessment unit can contribute towards the 40% • The final qualification grade will include the results from the units that are used to meet the terminal requirement • Unit results that satisfy the terminal requirement will be used towards the final qualification grade even if there is a better score for an earlier attempt at one or more of the units
Re-sit rules: before certification • Candidates may re-sit each unit once before certification • A tiered unit or tiered option may only be re-sat once, even if the re-sit is at a different tier • The better result counts towards the final qualification grade, unless the unit forms part of the terminal requirement - in which case this result must be used
Re-sit rules: before certification A qualification may be taken more than once • either by re-sitting all the units or • by re-sitting at least 40% of units and reusing previous results for others The terminal requirement must be satisfied again
Re-sit rules: before certification At least two units are required in the June 2012 series to meet the 40% terminal requirement. Although the June 2012 unit 2 result is less than that achieved in June 2011, it must be used to fulfil this requirement
Re-sit rules: after certification • After certification, a candidate may have two further attempts at each unit • Only the better of the last two results will count towards the final qualification grade (unless it forms part of the terminal requirement)
Re-sit rules: after certification Only the better of the last two results can be considered towards the second certification This unit result can be reused towards the second certification First certification Second certification
Future GCSE Developments • The regulator in England (Ofqual) has recently consulted on a move to linear exams only from summer 2014. 2. The regulator in Wales (DfES) has confirmed that there is no policy change in Wales 3. Further details are expected from the regulators

DfES Wales Centre Supportsupporting the EO ACCESS ARRANGEMENTS ONLINE (AAO)
DfES Wales Centre Supportsupporting the EO Access arrangements Access arrangements should be made at the start of the course so that candidates know what is available and have the access arrangement(s) in place for examinations and controlled assessment/coursework.
DfES Wales Centre Supportsupporting the EO Access arrangements – Normal way of working Access arrangement(s) should reflect what support is usually given to the candidate in the classroom and/or in internal school tests and mock examinations. This is commonly referred to as ‘normal way of working’. The candidate must have had appropriate opportunities to practice using the access arrangement(s) before his/her first examination, e.g. a computer reader or a scribe.
DfES Wales Centre Supportsupporting the EO Access arrangements – JCQ Inspections Any appropriate evidence and confirmation of the approval for the access arrangement(s) must be available for inspection at the venue/centre where the candidate is taking the examination(s). This must also include the new signed Data Protection Notice.
DfES Wales Centre Supportsupporting the EO Access arrangements – facilitator training Where a person is appointed to facilitate an access arrangement, i.e. The head of centre must ensure that the person appointed is appropriately trained and understands the rules of the particular access arrangement, as detailed in the RAG MAG
