  1. ClimTrans2050 The physical layer of a deepened structural modeling approach (Tier 1)Functionality focused modeling of energy related emissions Expert Workshop 4th March 2016, WIFO

  2. ClimTrans2050 • What could the deepened structural modeling approach mean for the energy system?

  3. The energy system: The conventional"black box" approach ClimTrans2050 • Presumed causalities between economic activities/prices andenergy flows • Typically poor representation of technologies, behaviour

  4. A deepened structural modelling approach of the energy system (1) ClimTrans2050 • Detailed analysis of the structure of the energy system • Modelling the whole energy chain • Starting from energy related functionalities provided by the interaction of stocks and flows

  5. A deepened structural modelling approach of the energy system (2) ClimTrans2050 Tier 1 Physicallayer

  6. Next research steps (1) ClimTrans2050 Deepening the functionality approach to energy modeling • Developing operational indicators for energy related functionalities: supporting information for obtaining a better understanding of thermal, mechanical and specific electric energy related functionalities (energy services) • Identifying gaps in currently available databases and developing proposals for improving data collection activities: databases need to be extended with respect to the concept of functionalities • Designing model modules for specific energy related functionalities: Tackling the complexities of specific functionalities, as in the case of shelter the role of temperature, lighting, and communication facilities • Collecting a knowledge base about technologies which are relevant for the transition to low-energy and low-carbon structures: evaluation with respect to energy productivity, energy sources and emissions along the cascade structure

  7. Next research steps (2) ClimTrans2050 Modeling the linkage between Tier 1 and 2 • Providing the details on technologies and investments • Impacts of these investments on energy productivity and energy demand and operating costs • Modeling the impact of these investments on other sectors of the economy including energy demand and related emissions Modeling the impact of Tier 3 on Tier 1 • Evaluating for energy related decisions the relevance of economic instruments (taxes, subsidies), prices and income and income distribution, command and control regulations (standards, zoning regulations) • Drivers for innovative technologies and business models

  8. ClimTrans2050 Thank you for your attention
