  1. Reading Quiz Feedback • Many of you have been losing points on “context and significance” when taking the reading quizzes. • Context = explain what was happening in the scene in the play when the quotation is spoken • Significance = • what does this quotation reveal about the character’s personality/emotions/feelings? • why is this quotation important to understanding the play?

  2. Agenda • Reading Quiz • Close Reading: Happy (73-75) • Reading and Questions • Gallery Walk • Homework / TTL

  3. Why does Happy act the way that he does?

  4. Nuanced Answer • Nuanced = deep in level / sophistication • Provides two or more answers from different perspectives • Uses quotations to support each answer. • Uses a transition word/phrase to link together answers.

  5. Why does Happy Act the Way He Does? Mr. Chen’s example of a nuanced response Happy lies and acts the way he does with women as a result of his lack of attention from his father Willy. Happy is constantly asking his dad, “I lost weight! Did you notice!” (34) but Willy is always focusing his attention on Biff instead. Happy feels like he needs to be something other than himself to gain the approval of his father. Furthermore, Happy is somewhat jealous of and trying to compensate for Biff’s popularity when they were teenagers. At Frank’s Chop House, Happy taunts Biff when they are with girls: “Where’s the old confidence, Biff?” (74) In a sense, Happy wants to “make up for lost time” and outdo his brother.

  6. Classwork Instructions • Read until page 83 either independently or with a partner. • Pick ONE of the questions below to answer. Write a NUANCED response to the answer. This will be your classwork today. • You may work together with a partner to find your reasons/quotations but must EACH write your answers.

  7. Questions to Answer • Which of Willy Loman’s sons is better? • Are Happy/Biff’s failings a) their own fault, b) society’s fault, or c) their father’s fault? • What is the symbolism and significance of the fountain pen which Biff steals? • How does Biff feel about his father?

  8. Homework (DUE TUESDAY) • Read until page 90. Please read CAREFULLY. There will be a reading quiz on these pages tomorrow in class. OR… 2. Annotate the text on either a blank piece of paper or post-it notes (there is no specific # of annotations- just annotate so that you are closely reading the text). I will collect and grade these annotations tomorrow.

  9. Examples of Annotations • Poor: I don’t understand why Willy is treating Linda this way. • Poor: Happy is really overlooked by Willy. • Strong: It does not make sense how Willy treats Linda. Linda is always taking care of him and comforting him; he does not seem to be grateful to her. • Strong: Willy does not seem to pay much attention to Happy seems to be so successful but Willy focuses on all his attention on Biff.
