Agenda • Introduction to SP1 for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 • Introduction to RemoteFX • Introduction to Dynamic Memory • Other Notable Changes in SP1
Windows 7 Service Pack 1 “But enterprises really don't have to wait for SP1 -- that's the old wisdom. The new wisdom is that it's already been through its battle-testing and this is the good one.” Roger Kay, Endpoint Technologies
Release Mechanics • SP1 continues to take advantage of shared codebase of Windows 7 and Server 2008 R2 • SP1 covers all editions of Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows 7 • Including Itanium for Server • Packages • 32 bit Windows 7 • 32 and 64 bit Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 • Itanium for Windows Server 2008 R2 • What about Windows Server 2008 and Windows Vista? • Different SP model, currently on SP2 RTM for SP1 will release in 2011
Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 Dynamic Memory RemoteFX Dynamic Memory allows the allocation of a range of memory (min and max) to individual VMs, enabling the system to dynamically adjust the VM’s memory usage based on demand. This provides more consistency in system performance enabling better manageability for administrators Microsoft RemoteFXleverages the power of virtualized graphics resources and advanced codecs to recreate the fidelity of hardware-assisted graphics acceleration, including support for 3D content and Windows Aero, on a remote user’s device. This allows for a local-like, remote experience.
RemoteFX Key Benefits • Rich user experience for server-hosted desktops and applications • Rich, local-like user experience for remote workers • Platform for partners to optimize for a variety of configurations • Virtualized graphics and advanced codecs for highest fidelity • Flexible and cost-effective solution • Support for simple, low-cost end point devices • Works with VDI and higher-density session-based remote desktops • RDP with RemoteFX enables host- or client-side rendering • Increased user productivity • Increases user productivity with full-fidelity remote user experience • Anywhere access to any screen content, including rich media and 3D • Display of any media content today and tomorrow will “just work”
RemoteFX Use Cases All connected worker scenarios can benefit from a RemoteFX-enabled desktop environment
RemoteFX – A Game Changer Enabling Technology Customer Value Differentiating Innovation Full rich Windows experience • Content and GPU independent intercept & rendering • Single GPU for multiple Hyper-V guests vGPU Remoting any content • Applications run at full-speed on host Host side rendering • Screen deltas sent to client based on network and client availability High fidelity user experience Intelligent screen capture and hardware-based encode • CODEC designed for text and image content • Single CODEC for VDI and RDS sessions • HW and software manifestations by design Full range of client devices Bitmap remoting and hardware-based decode
Remote Desktop Services with RemoteFX Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 Windows Server 2008 R2 • Scenario: VDI desktop replacement for connected knowledge workers on Windows 7 with good connectivity. • New Features in WS08 R2 SP1: Host-side rendering capabilities enabling rich media UX on broad range of end point devices • Scenarios: RDP 7.1 with RemoteFX available for VDI and session virtualization • Scenario: Multimedia application enhancements for remote users primarily accessing RDS from rich clients • New Features in WS08 R2: Support for multiple screens, bi-directional audio, Windows Media Player redirection and enhanced bitmap remoting • Scenarios: RDP 7 for VDI and session virtualization
RemoteFX USB Devices • Generic USB redirection • Allows you to redirect virtually any USB device transparently over RDP • Support for more devices than previously • Support for USB devices with thin clients • No client drivers necessary • Applications are transparent to redirected devices • Only one session can use USB device at a time

Dynamic Memory in Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 Overview • A memory management enhancement for Hyper-V • Enables customers to dynamically grow and decrease the memory of a virtual machine • Available as a feature in Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 Benefits • Better consolidation ratios with predictable performance • Enables linear scalability for deployment environments • Designed for production use VM1 VM2 VM3 VM4 T1 T2 T2 The information in this presentation is NDA until 8am PT- March 18, 2010
Dynamic Memory • Benefits • Enables higher consolidation ratios per host by addressing the greatest limiting factor to consolidation: Memory • A Production feature. • Overview • Memory is pooled and dynamically and securely distributed across VMs • Memory is dynamically added/removed based VM usage with no service interruption • Guest enlightened: guests & Hyper-V work TOGETHER
