Changes • Globalization catalyzed by IT/IS • AIS membership • IS as a discipline • Student expectations • Societal familiarity / expertise • Departmental focus • Nature of academic institutions • Competition for attention • Yet to be aware of or on the way
Importance of AIS • Home in times of turbulence • Bigger than any department or faculty • Membership in 100 countries • Direct access to future generations • University embedded – can directly influence research and teaching • Knowledge resources / expertise • Conferences • SIGs / regional chapters
Benefits of AIS • eLibrary (10 journals / dozen conferences) • Sponsorship / discounts on 25 journals • Faculty directory /AISWorld Listserv / CFPs • Research support • Instruments / theories / methodologies / tasks • literature / rankings • Teaching resources / program guides • Membership development • Doctoral consortia / Career placement • Webinars
Dues Increase • There comes a time in every association for a dues increase - that time for us is now • We’ve held off for over 5 years but the situation is increasingly untenable • Shortfall in future budgets – we’ve cut where we can • Shift towards a more balanced portfolio with less reliance on conferences • Broadened services
Comparable to Other Associations • Not a decision the council has taken lightly • To do nothing would be irresponsible • Thank you all for your help and support
Initiatives and Considerations • New AMS with SIG and chapter networking • Branding / creation of an AIS historian role • Publication innovations • Mentoring / Job Index initiative / marketplace • Expanded membership / student chapters • Networking with other associations • Cross-region / cross-border collaboration • Engaged scholarship and curriculum • Creating a world of support for AIS members
