Vegetation • vegetation of the Canadian cordillera is very diverse. It ranges from alpine tundra to coastal rainforest to grasslands and savanna forests. In fact 5 of the 8 major Canadian forest zones are found in the cordillera. • Mountain systems typically have complex vegetation due to climatic effects of elevation and mountains as barriers to air flow. Parallel bands of mountain ranges perpendicular to the easterly flow of weather systems creates many windward and leeward variation in vegetation. • The vegetation is divided into 14 zones. Each zone has a characteristic zonal vegetation, soil and macroclimate. The zones are also called biogeoclimatic zone, are often found as elevation bands in the mountain system, covering a narrow horizontal distance, but can cover extensive areas in the area. The 14 zones can be grouped into 7 regions.
