  5. The "Cornerstone Speech“ Alexander H. Stephens (Vice President of the Confederate States) March 21, 1861, Savannah, Georgia "Our new government is founded upon exactly the opposite idea; its foundations are laid, its cornerstone rests, upon the great truth that the negro is not equal to the white man; that slavery--subordination to the superior race--is his natural and normal condition."

Racism and Film Vocabulary Racism Xenophobia Spook Nigger- Negro- Coon Heisman Trophy Running back Cotton Bowl National Championship a: a belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular raceb: racial prejudice or discrimination Fear of Strangers Slang: Disparaging and Offensive. a black person. Nigger is a pejorative term and common ethnic slur against black people, and is English slang.

  8. White Supremacy • White supremacyIs • the belief thatwhite peopleare superior to people of otherracial backgrounds. • The term is sometimes used specifically to describe apolitical ideologythat advocates (supports) thesocialandpolitical dominance (superiority) of whites. • White supremacist groups can be found in most countries and regions with a significant white population, includingNorth America,Europe,Australia,New Zealand,South Africa, andLatin America.

  9. Discussion • Are there groups in China that believe that Chinese people are Supreme? • Have you ever experienced racism? • What would you do if someone treated you differently because of your race?

  10. The Ku Klux Klan (KKK) is a White Supremacist group. Different forms of white supremacy have different ideas of who is considered white, and not all white supremacist organizations agree on who is their greatest enemy. The militant approach taken by white supremacist groups has caused them to be watched closely by law enforcement officials.

  11. Throughout history, white supremacy ideology has been part of the fabric making up political institutions of the world. ManyU.S. statesbannedinterracial marriage throughanti-miscegenation lawsuntil 1967. South Africa maintained its white supremacist-likeApartheidsystem until the early 1990s.

  12. SKINHEADS Skinheads are a subculture that started in the UK in the 1960’s. Some skinhead groups have been connected to racially motivated violence, often towards immigrant groups. Some skinheads had engaged in violence against random Pakistanisand otherSouth Asianimmigrants (an act known asPaki bashingin common slang). Many skinheads immigrated to Australia and formed violent gangs called “Sharpies”. Because of their sheer numbers they were almost untouchable by police.

  13. multiculturalism- the doctrine that several different cultures (rather than one national culture) can coexist peacefully and equitably in a single country In many cases, the rise of racism and racial attacks has been in conjunction with the rise of immigration. In Australia, the 2005 Maroubra riots were during a time when increasing numbers of people from Middle Eastern countries were immigrating to Australia. 1. In what ways could multiculturalism turn ethnic groups into separatist groups who compete for power with the others? 2. What are the problems associated with assimilation? Should people be forced to integrate? 3. Tolerance or acceptance?

  14. Racial Stereotypes Anethnic stereotypeis a generalized representation of anethnic group, composed of what are thought to be typical characteristics of members of the group. The use of ethnic stereotypes is usually demeaning even when the characteristics might be considered positive because it tends to discount the importance and uniqueness of the individual.

  15. Uncle Sam in China

  16. ETHNIC JOKES We often see racial stereotypes exploited in “ethnic jokes”. Ethnic jokes are often aimed atminoritieswithin countries, or peoples from neighboring countries. Ethnic jokes come and go withsocial change, particularly with waves ofimmigrationfrom one country to another Such jokes are generally regarded as HATE SPEECH

  17. One day an Englishman, a Scotsman, and an Irishman walked into a pub together. They each bought a glass of beer. Just as they were about to enjoy their beer, three flies landed in each of their glasses, and were stuck. The Englishman pushed his beer away in disgust. The Scotsman fished the fly out of his beer, and continued drinking it, as if nothing had happened. The Irishman, too, picked the fly out of his drink, held it out over the beer, and started yelling at it, "SPIT IT OUT, SPIT IT OUT!!!!"

  18. Thespians, you must leave! • You are going to another country to live. • You will, in groups, present to the class. • You have 20 minutes to organize. • 1-2 minutes for each person (about 5-6 minutes). • Where are you from? • Where are you going? • Describe a cultural problem and how you solved this problem.
