Breed-Specific Legislation Cierra Banyas Cas 100 Spring 2013
Overview • What is breed-specific legislation? • Why is it a bad thing? • Opposing views
What is Breed-Specific Legislation? • Breed-specific legislation (BSL) is the banning or restriction of specific breeds of dogs considered “dangerous” breeds to promote safety. www.americanhumane.org
Why is BSL such a bad thing? • Laws, regulations, and ordinances are costly to enforce • No evidence that BSLs enhance public safety or reduce dog bite incidents www.humanesociety.org
Why is BSL such a bad thing? (cont.) • Good owners and dogs are punished • BSL causes hardship to responsible owners of dogs who happen to fall within the regulated breed • required to comply with local breed bans and regulations www.aspca.org
Why is BSL such a bad thing? (cont.) • Dogs go into hiding, which means… • they get less socialization • they have restricted outdoor exercise • they don’t get proper veterinary care www.aspca.org
Opposing Views – “myths” stopbsl.org
Conclusion • BSLs are restrictions on specific breeds that are considered “dangerous” • BSLs are costly to enforce • Good owners and dogs are punished • Dogs are forced into hiding • Most opposing views are just myths and not facts
