  2. COMMON DATASET (initial take-off): Sparkling Lake (Wisconsin)Area (ha) : 64Meandepth (m) : 11Max depth (m) : 20

  3. Time line for the nextyear • Introduction to new model framework • Core-group(and network) model development • Questionnaire • Take-offDevelopers and users Workshops • Generation of common model dataset(s) • GLEON 11Nanjing, ChinaOct 2010 • GLEON12 • GLEON13

  4. Ecosystem modeling working group (EMWG) G11 • Co-Moderators: Dennis Trolle and Jim Rusak Tuesday 19 Oct 9am Introductions all around about who is in the room and what they’re interested in. About half “core” people, ¼ “users”, and ¼ new to modeling. Dennis gave overview of EMWG work from G11 and workshop convened in Denmark. David Hamilton has 1D hydrodynamic code he’s willing to go over at the meeting if people are welcome. An open-source hydrodynamic biogeochemical model is being developed by Matt Hipsey. He connected by Skype to let us know about his progress; he thinks linked physical-biochemical model may be ready in ~ 1 year (and first prototypeup’n running before the end of 2010). The Denmark workshop participants had an idea to get a standard dataset of several lakes that could be used to compare models across several lakes. Ideal datasets would include long-term datasets and perhaps high frequency observation data. Datasets mentioned that are comparable include NTL LTER lakes, a few Denmark lakes, and perhaps some Ontario lakes. Data requirements for DYRESM-CAEDYM were reviewed by Dennis for the group; he has a document online that is very specific, set up for people who might just want to hand over the data to a modeler. We discussed about the use of ELCOM- and DYRESM-CAEDYM connected to a catchment model (SWAT) for different lake types and watershed types. Wednesday 20 October 2010 Breakout Groups • List of participants • Dennis Trolle • Jackie Qin • David Johnson • Chi Shiyun • Chen Yan Zang • Yiping Li • Lei Hua • WenbinHao • Edina Balogh • Emily Kara • Mingming Zhu • FenjuanHu • Jane Li • Jim Rusak • Yu Li • Dirk Sarpe • Mark Honti • LiancongLua • LauriArvola

  5. Scientific questions • How do different models perform/compare on a single lake dataset? • Organizational/networking processes. How do users, developers, new users best interact? (with Grace Hong) • Can models predict (relatively) large changes in ecosystem behavior represented by a single, common, long-term dataset? • Process with action items • Online survey to gage interest of wider GLEON community in modeling, training, users, developers • Compile common dataset – Sparkling Lake, WI, USA • Calendar • Online survey before G12 • Get dataset together before G12 • Introduction to new modelling framework (by Matt Hipsey) at G12 • Modeling new-user training workshop at G12 or G13? • Products • Common long-term Sparkling Lake dataset online available for research use, training, and test case • Modeling website as resource- updates • Results of survey informing what GLEON members want from the Modeling Working Group
