What is Get Active • Joint programme with Sheffield Hallam Uni, Sports Union and Sport Hallam • 23 Sports • Non-commitment sessions, aimed at semi-sporty students • 35 weekly sessions • Free (Sport Hallam Members, onsite). • £2.50 -£3 (non Sport Hallam members and offsite) • Increased intra-mural programme (new leagues and one-off competitions) • Increased workforce of student volunteers – students leading students • Hallam Sport Clubs increasing capacity for recreational players/ more teams.
Aims and Objectives increasedparticipation in sport and physical activity attract more membership into sports clubs for students to volunteer and access career development opportunities with the sports community outside of the University to sessions that are non competitive SUSTAINABILITY

Participation targets Key Outcomes The above figure includes attendance at our Get Active Sessions & Intrmural Programme and an increase in our Sport Hallam Clubs membership (using awareness from Get Active).
Workforce targets Key Outcomes 100% of all workforce will receive a vocational qualification: E.G. first aid, Sports Coach UK award, NGB level 1, officiating, Coordinator awards. Roles include ambassadors, coaches and officials.
Monitoring • Collecting Data: • Registers at each session • Microcache at Sport Hallam members (to also record income) • Registration form for Intra-mural competitions • Coachweb, for volunteer details. • All names are inputted on a master Excel document and updated weekly from the registers and microcache. • What we monitor: • Number of individual participants • Number of male/ females • Attendance figures - per sport/ per session/ weekly • How many visits each student has made to each session

Progress and Achievements So Far • Participation Numbers: • Individuals: 996 in semester 1 • Club increase – still collecting data • Overall – anticipate over halfway in our figures. • Links with NGB's - hockey, badminton, volleyball • Partnership working across SHU and SU • Workforce (so far) • 39 Coaches • 45 Volunteers • 84 in Total • Get Active Week - Launch event w/b 30th January
The Future of Get Active • Introduce Handball & Softball • Get Active prices embedded within Sport Hallam Membership • Links with Sports Courses to run the one-off tournaments as part of their course module. Also link with Hallam Union Volunteering • Sport Participation Officer in every Hallam Club committee to focus on increasing access for recreational players. • Students ambassadors to promote the programme across the university • Student focus group for Get Active • Incentives for attending sessions regularly

Challenges and Solutions Delivery Key members of staff started a few weeks before the programme started We had to hit the floor running and learn the programme QUICK Certain aspects of the planning were not completed, so we had to resolve and plan as we went along. Management team allowed us freedom to adapt the programme to solve issues Person who wrote the bid left, so a lot of information lost/ needed to be checked if completed Working with 3 different bodies (SHU, SU, SH) ie different working procedures Built up working relationships with the 3 bodies Understanding of how the 3 bodies work
Challenges and Solutions Monitoring How to monitor the sessions Design & implement a register Create an overall spreadsheet to capture information Not all students captured in first couple of weeks due to introduction of new monitoring Ensure all reception staff were briefed in how to input names on microcache Ensure volunteers enforced registration We went to sessions to assist with enforcement of signing in /paying Not all students signing the register or paying at reception
Challenges and Solutions Timetabling Some sessions at unsuitable times (e.g. Friday night) Changed sessions - e.g. Tchoukball from Friday to Tuesday. Swimming from lunchtime to an evening. Wording on the timetable confusing/offputting(e.g. social tennis) Took out words like 'Social'. Ensured wording was simple. E.g. coached session/ book & play Some locations were unsuitable - gymnastics, no table tennis at City. Researched new venues. E.g. gymnastics to a purpose built club. Added a new session at City site for TT.
Challenges and Solutions Marketing Website is not attractive or user friendly Worked with SHU marketing Asked students what they wanted Delay in the creation of marketing materials, so not widely advertised until a few weeks into the year. Made our own materials - posters, timetables and distributed around campus Posters and leaflets branding not attractive to students - better images and wording. Worked with SHU marketing Photo shoot to get Hallam students in the posters for Semester 2
Challenges and Solutions Workforce Coachweb - not specific for SHU, not easily workable. Delayed recruitment process Complete redesign and addition training. Made our own materials - posters, timetables and distributed around campus Used current sport club members to pass the word Gave brief talks at the beginning of lectures Advertising - not enough around campus due to late appointment of staff Met with volunteers individually in semester 1 Holding group induction at start of Semester 2 Start recruitment for year 2 now and plan inductions for start of year 2 No generic way delivering sessions from the volunteer workforce due to lack of inductions at start of semester 1
