Background and Purpose Background • Developed by Boys Scouts to excite and expand a sense of wonder in our Scouts • Uses various modules to explore the basic principles of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics
Background and Purpose Purpose • Uses two level of awards to recognize Scout activities • Focuses on additional work beyond rank activities
NOVA Awards Engineering Swing! Science Science Everywhere Technology Tech Talk Mathematics 1-2-3 Go! Overview • Focuses on individual STEM areas • Typically an award involves: • Watching an episode of a STEM related show • Completing a belt loop • Completing some STEM activities, • Visiting a STEM facility • Work can be combined with rank advancement activities
NOVA Awards Awards • First award earns the NOVA Patch • Additional awards earn Pi pins
SUPERNOVA Awards Overview • Recognizes superior achievement by a Cub Scout in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields. • Typically a Cub Scout begins work on the SUPERNOVA Award after completing at least two NOVA Awards. • Different awards for Cub Scouts and Webelos Scouts
SUPERNOVA Awards Cub Scouts • Eligible for Wolf and Bear Scouts • Involves earning 5 academic pins and completing other STEM activities • Academic Pins • Required – Mathematics and Science pin • Choose 3 • Astronomy, Computers, Geography, Geology, Map and Compass, Nutrition, Pet Care, Photography, Reading and Writing, Video Games, Weather, Wildlife Conservation
SUPERNOVA Awards Webelos Scouts • Involves earning 6 activity badges and completing other STEM activities • Activity Badges • Required – Scholar, Scientist, Engineer • Choose THREE • Craftsman, Forester, Geologist, Naturalist, Outdoorsman, and Readyman
