  2. Our Task • Explore the opportunity to offer new-for-profit electronic messaging services for IEEE members • Areas: Email and Instant Messaging

  3. Opportunities Identified • Family & Friends Email Aliases Service • Email Service w/ 1GB Mailbox • Secure Internet Messaging

Challenges • Competition with free email services such as Gmail, Hotmail and Yahoo • Competition with free IM services such as AOL and MSN • ASP Model – Further research might be appropriate to explore the opportunity to offer new services using an ASP for a profit. • Explore the possibility of offering these services at a membership benefit to help IEEE member retention

Family & Friends Email Alias Service • Benefits • UCE and Antivirus Protection • One email address that does not change • Member can subscribe as many aliases for a fee • Limitations • Not a real mailbox • Alias not allowed to be used as a “Reply-To: by some ISPs • Delivery cost per user • $0.38 a month / $4.54 a year ** ** Based on 80% service capacity for 110K Users (Profit factor not included)

Email Service w/ 1GB Mailbox • Benefits • Real mailbox w/ 1GB of email storage • Web Mail Access • POP, WAP for Mobile Devices, Email Forwarding • Limitations • E-mail retention & Legal issues/investigations • Email Client Support (Define which to support) • 24 x 7 Support (Additional Staff will be needed) • Competition with free services such GMail, Yahoo and Hotmail • Data Center space & power • Delivery cost per user • $1.81 a month / $21.75 a year ** ** Based on 80% service capacity for 110K users (Profit factor not included)

Secure Internet Messaging • Benefits • Allows member communication in real-time • Allows multiple user communication (Collaboration) • Limitations • Requires vendor proprietary client • ASP Model • Competition with free services such as AOL and MSN • Delivery cost per user • $1.00 a month / $12.00 a year ** ** Based on service for 75K users (Profit factor not included)
