Background • 2008 American Control Conference (ACC) is organized by the American Automatic Control Council (AACC), and it is held in cooperation with the International Federation of Automatic Control (IFAC). This premier conference and its associated pre- and post-conference workshops focus on advances in the theory and practice of automatic control.

Background • National and international society cosponsors of ACC include the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA), American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE), Association of Iron and Steel Technology (AIST), American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), International Society for Measurement and Control (ISA), and the Society for Computer Simulation (SCS).

2008 ACC overview iii. Program introduction • The 2008 ACC technical program covered new developments related to theory, application, and education in control science and engineering. The program consists of 22 invited sessions; 6 tutorial sessions; 108 contributed sessions in lecture format, and 11 interactive sessions (each of these consists of up to 12 papers/ demonstrations).
2008 ACC overview iv. Paper introduction • The ACC-08 Program Committee received a total of 1,283 submissions, accepted 757 regular and 122 invited papers. The submission volume this year is down (about 20%) from the last few years, but in the interests of maintaining the quality of the conference we did not attempt a proportionate increase in the acceptance rate. Ultimately, 66% of contributed papers and 89% of invited papers were accepted for inclusion in the final program.
