What we know about UK TNE provision • Since academic year 2007-08, it has been mandatory for UK institutions to report to HESA data on students studying the whole of their UK qualification outside of the UK. • Data on the following four fields are collected: • institution • country of activity • level of provision • type of activity • We now have 3 year’s worth of data with which some indication of trends can be gained, although any such analysis must be regarded with a little caution as institutions appear to have taken some time to adjust to reporting this activity outside of the UK.
Top level summary • the number of students studying their entire UK qualification outside of the UK has increased 23% in the last year from 408,685 in 09-10 to 503,795 in 10-11. • UK qualifications are now delivered in over 200 countries and territories outside of the UK • There are now more than 70 countries where at least as many students study a UK HE qualification in that country compared to the number of students travelling to the UK for their education • There are 14 countries where the difference between students studying a UK qualification in country and those studying in the UK is greater than 5,000.
