Local Efforts & Positive Trends • Writing Across the Curriculum with IA help • Campus workshops on basic skills • Purchase books for students in prealgebra • To get the book the students must go to tutoring • Applied Academics courses - linked with automotive course • Butte College – CAS • Counselors assigned to every basic skills math class • Intervention discussion • Using computer lab for computer aided instruction

  4. Local Efforts & Positive Trends • Summer bridge • Tutors in classroom • Developmental English, Reading, Math • Campus-wide basic skills conferences • Information competency learning community • Community of practice (3CSN) • Early Alert program for math • Inform students about resources

Current Concerning Trends • Decreasing funding • Decreasing course sections • Eliminating basic skills classes • Not scheduling course sequences • Not considering sequences when making cuts • Pushed to do StatPath and not the series of math • Not meeting STEM studnets needs • Increasing course CAPS

  6. Current Concerning Trends • Doing more with less • Attempting to continue promising practices/innovations with less or no money • Elimination of BSI coordinators • General tutoring paid for with BSI dollars

Need a clear voice • Send Basic Skills faculty to ASCCC leadership conference • Need a timeline with the story of Basic Skills efforts from the beginning • Need a “tree” of what’s happening • Need college administration to understand and support teams for basic skills efforts • Need to be creative! • How can we get more faculty to trainings • Can we share time (eg.
