Serotonin & Depression

Serotonin & Depression. This hypothesis claims that depression is caused by understimulation of serotonin in the brain. Serotonin pathways are only found in certain areas of the brain (from the raphe nuclei to the frontal lobe) Such understimulation in these areas affects mood.

  1. Serotonin & Depression • This hypothesis claims that depression is caused by understimulation of serotonin in the brain. • Serotonin pathways are only found in certain areas of the brain (from the raphe nuclei to the frontal lobe) • Such understimulation in these areas affects mood.

  2. Serotonin & Anti- Depressants • Prozac is an example of an SSRI (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor) • Explain how it works at the synapse.

  3. Antidepressants work by: • (i) inhibiting MAO activity • (ii) blocking reuptake • Both of these increase the levels of serotonin in the brain
