Woodlawn Goals for 2011-12 • Continue the vision of “Learning For All, Whatever It Takes” resulting in student academic growth meeting required proficiency levels. • Continue to learn about and implement differentiated instruction (especially related to reading and math) to address all Woodlawn students and their needs and to truly engage students in learning. • Continued student data-based collaboration that focuses on standards-based instructional interventions. • School-wide focus on writing instruction utilizing Ruth Culham’s materials as well as our new district math adoption- Math Expressions (with a school-wide focus on measurement), and research-based engagement and instructional strategies (from Teach Like a Champion.) • Continued use of Fred Jones’ Tools for Teaching, resulting in positive classroom management. • Promote the philosophy of “everyone in our school is learning”—staff and students alike. • Celebrate and explore best use of our resources (instructional coach, intervention blocks, After School Program, etc.) • Continue to promote and strengthen student/school/ parent relationships through PTO, Site Council, and increased positive parent communications.

Title Services * Title Reading and Math are federally funded programs which provide extra support to students in addition to the reading and math instruction provided in the classroom. * Students are selected after evaluating assessment scores, in-class performance and teacher recommendation. * Instruction is provided in small groups at the student's instructionallevel. Specials’ Teachers:Art * We believe all children are artists * Students will explore a variety of mediums and techniques- including clay. * Students will study art from many cultures and time periods * The curriculum is organized around the elements and principles of Art Composition, some of which are: line, shape, color, form, space, balance, pattern, and unity. Physical Education * Our job is to create a positive learning environment that helps build self-esteem. * We provide opportunities for students to participate in activities that improve their motor skills. * We help students understand the importance of cooperation, sportsmanship, and teamwork. Library Media Specialist The Library Media Specialist’s job is much more than just checking out books! * We teach children appreciation for good literature and wonderful illustrations, as well as help students explore technology! * We help students learn to find information effectively and to use their time well as well as how to recognize good information and information that might be misleading. * We teach students to be detectives! Additional Support Staff:Speech Pathologist The students I work with have speech and/or language needs. * Some students are working on specific speech sounds. * Some students are learning about such things as curriculum vocabulary, answering comprehension questions, and discerning the main points of text material or a teacher's instructions. * It's great to be the Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) at Woodlawn, where there is an atmosphere of appreciation and understanding as students strive to successfully express their thoughts, share their knowledge, and ask inquisitive questions. Gifted Resource Teacher * The state of Kansas believes that education for high ability students is focused on providing curricula that promotes advanced achievement and development of individual potential. * The mission of Lawrence Public Schools is to challenge high ability students to reach their potential by providing appropriate learning experiences. * My goal for high ability students is to provide individual enrichment and extension activities that will extend and broaden their current curriculum Deb Schmidt Gifted Resource Teacher

Occupational Therapist * In schools, Occupational Therapists support children to perform school-related activities (the “occupation” of students). * The need for Occupational Therapy is determined through the IEP process for students who are eligible for Special Education services. * OT typically focuses on developing the visual motor skills of writing/cutting/ and self care to promote successful participation in educational activities. Mental Health Support:Counselor * My job is to provide guidance and support to students in individual and small group settings. * I facilitate classroom guidance lessons in each grade on topics such as character education, friendship, and conflict resolution. * Jasper, my Therapy Dog, is utilized for social cues, anger management, and positive emotional well-being. Social Worker School Social Workers are the link between home, school, and community.  We promote and support students' academic and social success by providing specialized services that may include: * Assessment of student needs and strengths through observation, interviews, and testing. * Individual and group therapeutic services. * Working with students in both general education and special education settings. * Education and training for parents and guardians. * Collaboration and consultation with community agencies, organizations, and other professionals.
