HOW LONG HAS IT BEEN THERE? • American Nurses Association California • Vision Statement: providing resources and leadership for nurses to shape the nursing profession and health care today and for the future. • Mission Statement: is to advance the quality of health care and the ethical practice of nursing in contemporary society through legislation, regulation, and policy advocacy. 1911-Present

What has it been able to accomplish? • Expanded its services • Published a vast collection of material on nursing practice and the profession • Established a code of professional nursing • Developed and instituted the means for registered nurses to be credentialed in areas of specialization • Became legislatively involved to advance the nursing profession so that the roles, duties and practice areas of nursing are respected in the world today.

What is the outlook for this career in the next several years? • Between 2010 and 2020 the employment of registered nurse is expected to grow 26% • Growth will occur because of technological advancements, a greater number of health problems to be treated, and the baby boomer population who will demand more healthcare services.

What types of goods and services would this career produce and at what cost to you? • Educate patients and the public about various health conditions • Provide advice and emotional support to patients and their family members • Some nurses promote healthcare to the public • COST: -TIME A nurses job is very time consuming but has a very great reward.

IS there a chance that this job would get outsourced or moved to a different location that may leave you laid off or relocated? • Nurses are in high demand where ever you live. • Most get relocated because they want a higher salary. • Is there a chance that technology would take over this job? • Technology will advance but there will always be high demand for humans in this career because there are many tasks that can not be done by technology.

What is the average wage? • Lowest 10% earns $44,190. • Median earns about $65,000. • Top 10% earns more than $95,000 • Advancement? • Can get advanced with more experience and more education • The more qualified you are the more you get paid. • “You can’t be as choosey as in the past, You’re thankful for what you’re given.” • In the past most were offered five or six jobs out of nursing school but in present times one can be lucky to get one or two. • The reason they are paid this way is because of the high demand that nurses play in the heath care field.

  11. Is there a union? How long has it been there and what has it been able to accomplish? Any conflicts? • American Culinary Federation • organization based on promoting the professional image of American chefs worldwide • Founded in 1929 in New York City • Its primary goal is to help present and future chefs have the recourses and the education to fulfil their careers • In April of 2013, students of the Culinary institute of America walked out and protested that the schools standards were lowered and that they needed to enforce in new standards. • (Dress code, Applicants required to have work experience)

What is the job out look in the next several years? • Between 2010-2020 it is projected that there will be little to no change in the profession. • There may be a decrease in numbers of employed restaurant chefs as a result of restaurants wanting to lower costs to them. • In 2010 there was about 100,000 chefs and in 2020 there is projected to be 99,000 chefs ; DECREASE

What types of goods and services does it produce and at what cost to you? • Chefs supervise the rest of the cooking staff • Make sure that the food is fresh • Plan menus • Hire, train, and mentor other cooks By becoming a chef the cost to me is the time and money that I am going to invest in my profession, but if I invest in the right ways ill be able to advance to a higher position and make more money doing something that I like to do.

Is there a chance that this career could be outsourced or moved to a different location that may leave you laid off or having to relocate? • Chefs work: • Restaurants • Hotels • Privet house holds • Many more… • The job couldn’t be outsourced but you can be moved or relocated to a different location. • Some may be laid off in a result of the business owner having to cut costs to make a profit. • Some one can be relocated to a location that is in high demand for a chef or that have a higher pay.

  15. Is there a chance that technology could someday take this career and render you no longer needed? • Technology will not take this job but it will help chefs prepare the meals faster and more efficient. • Electric laser cutter • Mobile heat plate • Electric stove • Electric supplies etc.

Is there a lot of competition in this career? • In the upcoming years job opportunities will be best for chefs and head cooks with several years of work experience • Job competition is increase in work places such as upscale restaurants, hotels, and casinos. • Important skills to increase chances of obtaining a job: • Business skills • Creativity • Leadership skills • Sense of taste and smell

Is there a chance of advancement? • Lowest 10% = $23,260 • Median % = $41,000 • Top 10% = $80,000 • The level of pay for chefs and head cooks varies greatly by region and employer. • The more experienced the higher the position; • Start as a cook and then move to head chef • The pay scale is this way because of the places that higher the chefs. • Example: 1 star restaurant = less pay, 5 star restaurant = highest pay.

What training/education is required for this career? • Culinary school: to get a degree • Curriculum: • French culinary techniques • knife skills • sauce and stock preparation • how to identify quality food products and facts about seasonings • Diversity: Different cultures food • Experience: Continuing to improve their skills and keep up with what's in trend. • 1-5 years to finish all schooling and begin working on their own

  20. Is there a union connected to this career? How long has it been there and what has it been able to accomplish? Has it had any problems in recent memory? • The National Association of Secondary School Principals • Founded in 1916 • Mission: promotes excellence in middle level and high school leadership through research-based professional development • Accomplishments: • Promoting high professional standards • Focusing attention on school leaders' challenges • Providing a "national voice" for school leaders • Building public confidence in education • Strengthening the role of the principal as instructional leader • “there is a problem with the school system in the US, and it starts with the teachers, and the ones in charge.” • Test scores are far below and overseas

What is the outlook for this career over the next several years? • Projected to grow by 10% between 2010-2020. • The number principals is expected to expand because the number of students is projected to increase by 5%. • Go from about 237,000 to about 260,000 principals • employment growth will vary by locations

What types of goods or services would this career produce and at what cost to you? • It would produce a person that students can go to is they need anyone to talk to if they need help or advice on a situation • The cost would be the time and money that one will invest on the education to earn the degree for becoming a principal. • What the job consists of: • Ensure that staff have the tools and resources they need to do their jobs effectively • Discipline students and help teachers manage students’ behavior • Meet with parents and teachers to discuss students’ progress and behavior • Much more..

Is there a chance that this career could be outsourced or moved to a different location that may leave you laid off or having to relocate? • Every school needs a principal so they are going to be in demand. • This job can not get outsourced in the result that the number of students is projected to increase. • One can get relocated to another location if they are not doing a good enough job of running the school or if they wish to seek better benefits or get promoted to a principal position that has a higher pay.

Is there a chance that technology could someday take this career and render you no longer needed? • “Technology will not replace humans” • Humans will always have a place in this world. • Principals will always be needed to run the school and preform the duties that need to be done. • Technology will only have an impact on how the school is operated • Many schools, including ours, are going electronic based. • Competition? • There is projected to be a 4% increase in competition of people that want to become principals

Is there a chance of advancement? • Lowest 10% = earn less than $58,300. • Median % = earn around $86,970. • Top 10% = earn more than $129,480 • The more schooling that you have the more advanced the position one will have: • Most gain work experience and work as a teacher while they earn their in master’s degree in education leadership or education administration • An assistant principal can advance to become a principal. Some principals advance to become superintendents.

What training/education is required for this career? • Principals often must have a master’s degree in education leadership or education administration. • 6 years for full masters degree • Programs prepare future principals • prepare and manage budgets • set goals and carry out plans to meet them • work with parents and the community. • Important qualities: • Communication skills • Critical thinking skills • Decision making skills • People skills • Problem solving skills
