REQUIREMENTS FOR ADMISSION TO ADDITIONAL COURSES: FET COLLEGES • FET COLLEGES OFFER VOCATIONAL COURSES – GETS YOU READY FOR PARTICULAR JOB OR EMPLOYMENT • MANY FET COLLEGE STUDENTS FIND WORK FASTER THAN UNIVERSITY STUDENTS • FET COLLEGES FOCUS ON SCARE SKILLS AND CAREERS – HAVE LINKS WITH INSTITUTIONS AND CORPRATE WORLD. • COURSES ARE PRACTICAL WITH SOME THEORY – HOW TO BRIDGE THE GAP BETWEEN KNOWLEDGE AND REAL LIFE APPLICATION – REAL WORKPLACE EXPERIENCE • SOME FET COLLEGES ARE ACCEPTED AT UNI SO YOU CAN STUDY FURTHER • ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS VARY, DEPENDING ON THE COURSE
PROMOTION REQUIREMENTS FOR NSC • NSC – NATIONAL SENIOR CERTIFICATE (MATRIC CERTIFICATE) YOU NEED THE FOLLOWING TO PASS • ONE HOME LANGUAGE – 40% • TWO OTHER SUBJECTS – 40% • THREE SUBJECTS – 30% YOU MAY ONLY FAIL ONE SUBJECT ( LESS THAN 30%) IF YOU HAVE COMPLETED ALL THE SCHOOL BASED ASSESSMENTS IN THIS SUBJECT – ALL THE SCHOOL PROJECTS/ TESTS/ ASSIGNMENTS FOR THIS SUBJECT.
ADMISSION POINT SCORE (APS ) • SEE TABLE 2 ON PAGE 47 • ADMISSION TO HIGHER LEARNING INSTITUTIONS DEPEND ON APS • NOTE: FOR THE HIGHEST MARKS , THE APS HAS TWO SCORES WHILE THE NSC HAS ONLY ONE NSC SUBJECTS • SEE TABLE 4 PAGE 47 • THERE ARE TWO GROUPS OF SUBJECT • COMPULSARY SUBJECTS – TABLE 3 PG 47 • DESIGNATED SUBJECTS – TABLE 5 (EXAMPLES) PG 48
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS FOR ADMISSION TO STUDY FOR HIGHER CERTIFICATE, DIPLOMA, OR DEGREE • SEE TABLE 6 PG 48 – THESE ARE THE REQUIREMENTS BY LAW • SOME COURSES/ INSTITUTIONS REQUIRE SPECIFIC COMBINATIONS OF SUBJECTS OR HIGHER APS SCORES • NO INSTITUTION WILL ACCEPT YOU IF YOU ONLY ACHIEVE THE MIN FOR ALL YOUR SUBJECTS • YOU MUST ACHIEVE ATLEAST 30% FOR THE LANUAGE THAT THE INSTITUTION USES FOR TEACHING, TRAINING AND LEARNING
NATIONAL BENCHMARK TESTS (NBT) • YOU MAY BE ASKED TO WRITE THE NBT. THERE ARE 2 TESTS – YOU CAN BE ASKED TO WRITE ONE OR BOTH • THE AQL TEST – MULTIPLE CHOICE TEST – 3HRS AND 5 MINUTES CONSISTS OF: • ACADEMIC LITERACY TEST – TESTS LANGUAGE SKILLS, VOCABULARY, EVALUATE EVIDENCE, DRAW CONCLUSIONS AND PICK OUT MAIN IDEAS • QUANTITATIVE LITERACY TEST – TEST ABILITY TO APPLY FORMULAE, READ AND INTERPRET GRAPHS, CHARTS TABLES , MEASUREMENT AND LOGICAL REASONING
2. MATHEMATICS (MAT) – 3HRS – MULTIPLE CHOICE BASED ON GR12 CURRICULUM. • YOU WIL WRITE THIS TEST IF YOUR COURSE INCLUDES ANY MATHEMATICS SUBJECT. • YOU CAN WRITE THESE TESTS BEFORE THE MATRIC FINAL EXAM SO YOU CAN APPLY FOR BURSARIES AND COURSES AT INSTITUTIONS BEFORE THE END OF THE YEAR. • YOUR RESULTS WILL THEN BE COMBINED WITH YOUR NSC RESULTS AND WILL DETERMINE WHERE YOU SHOULD BE PLACED: REGULAR, BRIDGING OR FOUNDATION PROGRAMMES • IT WILL ALSO HELP BURSARY PROVIDERS TO DECIDE WETHER OR NOT TO HELP YOU.
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS FOR SPESIFIC COURSES OR PROGRAMMES • DIFFERENT DEPARTMENTS IN SOME INSTITUTIONS HAVE DIFFERENT REQUIREMENTS FOR ADMISSIONS. THEY: • GIVE EXTRA POINTS FOR PASSING DESIGNATED SUBJECTS • GIVE EXTRA POINTS FOR ENG HOME LANGUAGE OR ENGLISH FAL AND MATHEMATICS • REQUIRE YOU TO WRITE THE NBT

HOW TO FINANCE YOUR FET COLLEGE STUDIES THE DEPARTMENT OF HIGHER EDUCATION AND TRAINING OFFERS FET COLLEGE BURSARIES THE REQUIREMENTS ARE: • SOUTH AFRICAN CITIZENSHIP • ENROLLED OR INTENDING TO REGISTER FOR A NATIONAL CERTIFICATE (VOCATIONAL / NCV) • IN NEED OF FINANCIAL ASSISSTANCE • SHOWS POTENTIAL FOR ACADEMIC SUCCESS, EG. PASSING MARKS IN GR11 AND GR12

STUDY LOANS MONEY LENT BY BANK TO FINANCE STUDY OPPORTUNITIES YOU NEED TO BE REGISTERED AT A HIGHER EDUCATION INSTITUTE TO GET A STUDY LOAN APPLY AT THE FOLLOWING INSTITUTIONS: • BANKS: USUALLY A PARENT OR SPONSOR APPLIES FOR YOU – THIS PERSON MUST BE FINANCIALLY STABLE • EDULOAN: THESE LOANS COVER COURSE FEES, REGISTRATION, TEXTBOOKS AND EDUCATIONAL TOOLS. • NATIONAL STUDENT FINANCIAL SCHEME (NSFAS) : FOR STUDENTS WHO SHOW THAT THEY WILL SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETE THEIR STUDIES. IF YOU DO WELL YOU CAN GET 40% OF WHAT YOU BORROWED.
3. SCHOLARSHIPS MONEY THAT A COMPANY, BUSINESS, ORGANISATION AWARDS TO YOU BECAUSE YOU DID WELL IN ACADEMICS OR SPORT. 4. LEARNERSHIPS AND SETA’S LEARNERSHIP: JOB THAT PAYS WHILE YOU STUDY. OFTEN DON’T GET A FULL SALARY BUT A SMALLER ALLOWANCE SETA: SECTOR EDUCATION AND TRAINING AUTHORITY AFRICA HAS 21 SETA’S FOR VARIOUS INDUSTRIES THE LEARNERSHIP PROGRAMME IS ORGANISED BY SETA A CONTRACT IS SIGNED BETWEEN YOU AND INSTITUTION – CONTRACT ENDS WHEN QUALIFICATION IS OBTAINED.
OBLIGATIONS IN TERMS OF FINANCIAL ARRANGEMENTS • BURSARIES • USUALLY DON’T HAVE TO PAY BACK UNLESS YOU FAIL. YOU MAY HAVE TO WORK FOR THE COMPANY AFTER YOU FINISH – CONTRACT BURSARY. 2. SCHOLARSHIPS • YOU DON’T HAVE TO PAY BACK MUST YOU MUST DO WELL IN YOUR STUDIES 3. LEARNERSHIPS • YOU DON’T HAVE TO PAY FOR A LEARNERSHIP
4. STUDY LOANS • FROM BANK – PAY MONEY BACK + INTEREST • FROM COMPANY – THEY MAY WANT YOU TO WORK FOR THEM WHEN STUDIES ARE FINISHED. • FROM NSFAS – YOU START TO REPAY WHEN YOU EARN R30 000 OR MORE A YEAR. THEN YOU PAY 3% OF YOUR ANNUAL SALARY, THE MORE YOU EARN, THE MORE YOU PAY. • -
