Reported Speech. Changing Tenses : Tom: “I eat breakfast every morning.” Tom said that he ate breakfast every morning. Eun Hee : “Sally is playing basketball later.” Eun Hee told me that Sally was playing basketball later. Linda: “He has been to Mt. Jiri many times.”

Reported Speech Changing Tenses: Tom: “I eat breakfast every morning.” Tom said that he ate breakfast every morning. EunHee: “Sally is playing basketball later.” EunHee told me that Sally was playing basketball later. Linda: “He has been to Mt. Jiri many times.” Linda said that he had been to Mt. Jiri many times.
Reporting Past Tenses • Mingi: “I went to the circus yesterday.” Mingi told me that he had gone to the circus yesterday. • Arturo: “We were riding our bikes.” Arturo said that they had been riding their bikes. • Sumiko: “My friends had learned Japanese before visiting me in Tokyo.” • Sumikosaid that her friends had learned Japanese before visiting her in Tokyo.
Game #1 • Take turns reporting the direct speech in each space. • Do all the spaces • Use any subjects you want: • “He - (me)” • “They...” • “My mother...” • Alternate between “said” and “told ~”
Reported Imperatives Teacher / students: “Open your books to page 13.” • The teacher told the students to open their books to page 13. He / She: “Don’t call me before 7:30.” • He told her not to call him before 7:30. • Which is usually used to report instructions or commands...? • “said” • “told”
Exceptions: • you don’t need the second name for “said” • imperative statements use “told” Game #2 You and your partner should make a reported speech sentence for each space on the game board. Alternate between “told” and “said”. Choose a card from the pile and report what you read. EX. - Take a card: - Report using names in each space: “It’s raining very hard today.” “Tim told Brian that it was raining very hard [that day].” “Tim said that it was raining very hard [that day].”
Too personal topics for discussion In the U.S. it’s considered rude to ask someone you just met about: • age • weight • ETC... What topics do you think are rude to ask someone you don’t know well?

Discuss these situations with your partner: Try to use reported questions & statements as much as possible. • When was the last time you talked to your (father / mother / other family members)? • Who has given you good advice recently? • Who did you talk to yesterday?

Final Exam • The final exam is a conversation with another student. • the conversation will be around 7 minutes • topics will be chosen at random from a list you practice in class • you have to cover the target language from Units 1, 2, 3, 4, 5
Final Exam Practice • Have a four (4) minute conversation with your partner. • try to stay on the topic that I give you • ask questions • answer questions • listen to what your partner says • try to use several of the language points as you talk • When I tell you to “change”, move to the next partner for a new conversation.
