4. Why PIE???? Regional accrediting associations have expectations regarding institutional effectiveness. This means that: • Institutions plan what they do according to their missions (or purposes) • Institutions then learn, by looking at their purposes, if they are using what is learn to do better. • Example:

5. PIE PIE at ETSU is a process required of all academic and administrative units annually. During the process, each unit must report on how they: • Understand their mission, • Learn about the degree to which the missions are being fulfilled, and • Use what they learn to improve

8. Purpose or Mission Mission statements tell us who we are and what we are about. However, most of our colleges and universities have unclear and ambiguous missions (Birnbaum,1998).
