What you will learn in this session: • How to clearly state what you are trying to accomplish in your department • Why P.I.E. is important • Learn about definitions of success • Define your definitions of success • Determine ways of learning about success • Know the degree to which you have been successful
Why PIE???? Regional accrediting associations have expectations regarding institutional effectiveness. This means that: • Institutions plan what they do according to their missions (or purposes) • Institutions then learn, by looking at their purposes, if they are using what is learn to do better. • Example:
PIE PIE at ETSU is a process required of all academic and administrative units annually. During the process, each unit must report on how they: • Understand their mission, • Learn about the degree to which the missions are being fulfilled, and • Use what they learn to improve
Benefits of PIE • PIE helps us: • remember what we are trying to accomplish • become more aware of how our work affects others, and • Strive for excellence PIE at East Tennessee State University (http://www.etsu.edu/opa/pie.aspx)
Purpose or Mission Mission statements tell us who we are and what we are about. However, most of our colleges and universities have unclear and ambiguous missions (Birnbaum,1998).
